Review
“I was brought into a world I did not know existed and grew to care about two people I’ve never met. The author’s compassion and wit, his eye for a telling detail and his ear for dialogue―all of it comes together as a pitch-perfect rendering of these two humans in letters on a page.â€-Mary Roach, author of Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War"Part reflection, part travel log, and an all-over love song to Lesotho, EVERYTHING LOST IS FOUND AGAIN is a beautiful story that will have readers longing to travel to foreign lands. As an outsider, Will McGrath sees both the oddities and the commonality of people. With a compassionate writing style that never condescends , he shares his experiences of both tragedy and joy as he ventures into his host land. Wrapped in the golden glow of a warm heart, McGrath has crafted a story that can proudly sit along side the works of Bill Bryson and Alexander McCall Smith."-Pamela Klinger-Horn, Excelsior Bay Books"With astute sensitivity, a reporter's eye, and a poet's command of language, McGrath introduces us to so much more than a place. He situates us inside the small quiet moments of grace that define everyday lives. The writing is at once joyous and devastating, luminous and tender." -Inara Verzemnieks, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of Among the Living and the Dead"Who says there are no places left on earth to explore? In this charming memoir, Will McGrath traverses one of the world's least-known countries - Lesotho, tiny and mountainous, grappling with AIDS but rich with storybook history and its own invincible spirit. Everything Lost Is Found Again is beautifully written, by turns moving and hilarious. It's an enlightening adventure in the tradition of Patrick Leigh Fermor and V.S. Naipaul." -Tony Perottet, author of Off the Deep End: Travels in Forgotten Frontiers“In dazzling prose and with humor both tender and sidesplitting, McGrath pulls off what I most adore about foreign reportage: he makes me care deeply about a place I’ve never been and wish desperately that I, too, could visit the nation and share his experiences.â€â€•Rafe Bartholomew, former Grantland senior editor and author of Pacific Rims

After living in Lesotho and working in Mokhotlong with TTL, this brought back amazing memories. As soon as he described the secret alarm in the cars, I laughed. Borrowing another person's car meant knowing where the secret button was, and sometimes you couldn't find it which meant exactly what happened to him. Thank you for writing this book and reminding us about the small things in Maseru and beyond! Great read!
Will McGrath turns out phrases like no one else: wry, sweet, with pace and a light touch. Plus, the content is also sublime: you can see and hear and feel what it's like in Lesotho. You'll fall in love with all the people he met, the children he taught. It's non-fiction, but romantic. I can't wait to see what he writes about next.
The author takes you on a journey through his Lesotho, personalizing every character and leaving a firmly etched imprint of the people and places he met along the way. It is a sincere love letter to a faraway place. The vignette style makes it approachable for a reader with only short bursts of time to read. It will make you cry (or at least glaze your eyes over a little), and it will make you laugh.
This book is full of captivating stories. I have given 4 books for others to read
This is a delightful read on many levels. First, it has a documentary-like , travelogue feel that transports the reader to a little-known place of warm, hand-holding people suffering under incredible percentages of the AIDS virus.Secondly, it is a humorous, relatable tale of 20 months spent in a completely different culture. And last but not least, it is a great read due to the author's ability to make vignettes out of his experiences, small pictures of exquisitely detailed events that make a series of very enjoyable stories.
This book is so beautiful. Transporting, poetic, hilarious, and sad. The author feels like a best friend you’ve never met, and the people of Lesotho, the tiny country you never really considered, feel like an intimate part of your human family through his loving and unflinching words. This is the kind of book that makes the world grow smaller and the human heart grow bigger. I’m nearing the end, and I wish it would last longer. I keep finishing chapters and wiping tears from my eyes. I can’t wait to share it with friends!
Equal parts educational and inspiring. Will McGrath's account of his first year in the African kingdom of Lesotho captures the beauty of human curiosity and compassion. I laughed, I cried, I read my eyes out. There isn't a single wasted sentence in the entire book and the verbs are stunning. I loved every page and would highly recommend to anyone interested in reading engaging essays.
This book is transporting in the truest sense of the word: it takes you elsewhere.
