This book was a lot of fun. It's a quick read, and a bit silly in places--but those of those are features, rather than bugs.It would make a great gift for any space fan of almost any age; I've shared it with kids and teenagers, and they've enjoyed it just as much as I did as a professional working in the aerospace industry.Relevant to one of the other comments left here, you should know what you are getting into before buying this book. It's not a full length. 75,000 word tome: it's a small book (about the size of a music CD case, I'd guess) that's beautiful to look at and full of intriguing and fun facts about the human experience of being an astronaut in space. If that's what you are looking for, you'll be very satisfied with your purchase. Ms. Waldman is a great story teller with an excellent eye for graphic design, and it shows in this book.

Excellent short informative read. Makes a nice gift for younger ones.

All you ever wanted to know about going to space, but didn't have anyone to ask. I loved this book and plan to give it to the young people (of all ages) in my family, to inspire them to always remain curious, daring, and adventurous. And that our planet is a beautiful thing worth protecting.

Great little stories. A little bit too short, I expected more, longer stories.

This is not a science book. This is a conversation starter. It's a coffee table book. It's full of questions you would be afraid to ask an astronaut because it might sound too unscientific. This book is an easy read, so pace yourself. Don't digest it all at one time. This book is one you would pass around and share with others. Or you could just suggest that someone buy their own copy. Most importantly, this book is fun.

This book is so much fun! It is full of fascinating facts and tidbits of the details of the lives of astronauts. Both kids and adults will enjoy it. I've even read bits of it out loud to friends and family. And it's really nicely designed as well. It would make a great gift.

Fascinating facts that appeal to children, adults, friends, students and medical patients. Good conversation starter info.I loved it and everyone I know who has read it finds it interesting and fun.Author has done an A-1 job with the subject

Cute little book. It's got some surprising anecdotes, fun to read, you can get through the entire book in 15-20 minutes. Makes a good gift for someone who is into the idea of space exploration.

This book first appeared in 1978 in a series edited by Frank Kermode. It was later reissued by the University of Chicago Press with the prefatory essay “Heidegger: In 1991,” a reprint of an essay published by Steiner in 1989 (“Heidegger, Again”). The book is an introduction to Heidegger’s thought which is constrained by the fact that the some 60 volumes of Heidegger’s oeuvre had not yet appeared in print. Nevertheless, Steiner explores a multiplicity of texts that appeared before and after SEIN UND ZEIT, though the latter deserves and receives the bulk of his commentary.Steiner begins by posing the fundamental question: is Heidegger one of the west’s great philosophers, fit to be placed among such names as Plato and Kant or is he an obscurantist dealing in smoke and mirrors? (Steiner notes, e.g., that Bertrand Russell’s history of philosophy does not even mention him.) Steiner finally argues that he is one of the west’s great philosophers, if only because of his influence on the existentialists, the French Nietzscheans, modern literary criticism, modern psychoanalysis, and so on. Steiner acknowledges the obscurantist side of Heidegger and the fact that he may be ultimately forced to deal in tautologies. At the same time he recognizes the boldness of Heidegger’s labors and the depth of his thought. He does not avoid the question of Heidegger’s carrying water for the National Socialists and is even more troubled by his post-1945 silence concerning the holocaust. He judges Heidegger to be a great philosopher but a small man, preeminently in his apparent cowardice with regard to the holocaust and the Nazis but also in his exhibition of what Steiner calls his academic ‘cunning’.Steiner is probably the individual best positioned to write this book. While he is not an ontologist per se he is enough of a polymath to deal with the linguistic, rhetorical, philosophical and historical problems posed by Heidegger’s thought and experience. The book is not just as lucid as the subject allows. It goes beyond that standard and presents Heidegger’s thought in a way that interested layreaders (as opposed to professional philosophers) can follow with relative ease. The fact that he begins with Heidegger’s terminology and explores it at length helps a great deal. The fact that he can operate fluently in German, French and English along with the fact that he knows the pre-Socratics and the contemporary expressionist poets who profoundly influenced Heidegger facilitates and enriches his analysis.Steiner is incapable of writing a dull book and he is capable of writing books—across a spectrum of subject matter—that leave his readers with that sense of awe that Heidegger felt we should have with regard to Being itself. He is, quite simply, an international treasure. Senior colleagues of mine who encountered him, decades ago, at the University of Chicago, knew, at the outset, that he was a person apart. This is the sort of book which tests Steiner’s depth and range and he is fully equal to the task.Highly recommended.

To read George Steiner is to bask in the presence of a great intellectual mind at work. The popular French frauds so à la mode today seem determined to instill nothing more than doubt, but I have always believed that clarity of thought (which does not preclude doubt) is what makes a critical text like Steiner's monograph on Heidegger valuable. Derrida merely muddies the water (as Nietzsche would say), but Steiner puts you in touch with one of the most obscure, difficult, and significant philosophers of the 20th century. This is a short book, but it is slow reading. Not because of jargon-riddled wordplay, but because Steiner takes the time to untangle Heidegger's neologisms and strange, poetic language. Indeed, the first half of the book is titled "Basic Terms," an understanding of which will enable the reader to follow what Heidegger is trying to say about existence, authentic being, etc.. Steiner puts Heidegger's works into historical context and explains his methodology. To wit, Heidegger truly believes that we are spoken through language, so his philosophizing takes the form of etymologizing, going back to the origins of words, and recovering what can help us to think Being. According to Steiner, we never do get to defining Being, but the journey is rich and the effort is worthwhile.Heidegger wants to overcome Western Metaphysics, which has been determined by Plato (who privileges the noumenal realm of ideas over the phenomenal world we live in) and Aristotle (who objectifies the natural, phenomenal world by subjecting it to study). Both strategies have left us without the ability to listen to or open ourselves up to Being, to standing in awe before its mystery.Steiner also elucidates Heidegger's notion of authenticity (accepting that we are beings-toward-death), and his belief that anxiety, guilt, and care are inherent to authentic being. Why is this? Because we are both beings-in-the-world and beings-in-time. Death, for Heidegger, "is not an event; it is a phenomenon to be understood existentially," a process, part of our becoming. There is something extremely liberating in this notion, and both Heidegger and Steiner are aware of it. Angst, or existential anxiety, is not something to be eliminated with facile religious beliefs, counseling, or psycho-pharmaceuticals; it is to be understood as the mark, the indication of a being striving to live authentically, embracing fate (that which has been sent to a being-in-the-world).Because we are beings-in-the-world we must also be beings that care: care about what others think of us; care about our world; and care for others. Steiner develops this idea as it is revealed in Heideggers' works, and he also addresses the issue of his involvement with Nazism. How does one reconcile caring, commitment, and concentration camps?Recognizing that we are still too close to the Holocaust to be dispassionate, Steiner nonetheless attempts to understand this facet of Heidegger's life. Steiner is neither persecutorial nor apologetic. And he is much more disturbed by what was not said than by what was. Why, he asks repeatedly, was Heidegger silent about Europe's "season in Hell" after the war? Steiner has a difficult time getting past this, but does not belabor the issue. Heidegger's works are indeed part of the spirit of the times, the zeitgeist, and have certain affinities with Nazi ideology. But Steiner is unable to conclude that Heidegger was an anti-Semite; there does not seem to be enough convincing evidence for that. But still, why the silence? All in all, Steiner's book is the best introduction to this influential thinker. My field is Comparative Literature, not Philosophy, and I feel as though I learned a tremendous amount by reading this book. If you only read one introduction to Heidegger, this monograph should be it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be introduced to the work of Martin Heidegger. It is eloquently written, has clarity in its expression, and is approachable by the reader who has not read philosophy systematically. In addition, Steiner addresses in a remarkable way Heidegger's relationship with Nazism, and his "silence" after the Second World War.Overall, it is not an easy read, but the best way to get introduced to Heidegger's work.

Thanks for your excellent service. The book was in great shape. I will treasure it. Price was great too. I am absolutely satisfied.

Oh my. Is there another book as impenetrable but essential? Tolerating the paradoxes here is both driving me crazy and feeding my soul.

Who on earth is Adoniram Judson? Courtney Anderson's book details Judson's life from infancy to his passing, having described the incredible hardships and travail he and his family endured to bring Christ to the Buddhist land of Burma, now known as Myanmar. So many touching stories, you'll wonder if you're reading fiction, yet all accounts are true. Anderson's finesse in describing Judson's letter to his fiance's father is priceless in it's brutal honesty and ironic amusement. The deaths his children and the passing of others so intimately related to Judson are touched with a sensitivity respecting the immensely strong bond and passion he shared in marriage. His fierce determination to get to Burma amidst so many frustrations is almost too agonizing to read, except that the struggle is true. Young Adoniram's faith was virtually lost in college until a faithful God intervened one night in a tiny inn, and this story alone will make one wonder at the wisdom of our God.There is simply too much to gain from this book. Thankfully, this book is still in print and has something for everyone, even the unbeliever.

Quick InfoTitle: To the Golden Shore, a biography of Adoniram JudsonAuthor: Courtney AndersonYear Published: 1956, 1987Category: BiographyTags: Suffering, Frontier Missions, John PiperPriority: 4 – An immensely helpful and crucial read that would be a great book to glean from.Brief SummaryIn 1812, at the age of 22, Adoniram Judson left America for India (eventually ending up in Burma) as one of America’s first foreign missionaries, burning in his heart to obey the command to make disciples of all the nations (Mt 28:20). During his missionary career, he suffered through chronic fever, a torture camp, depression that drove him to mysticism, frequent threat of death, and constant discouragement. The beginning of his ministry saw little fruit, and the latter part bore fruit only through immense suffering. Many of his children died early due to illness. Those that didn’t die from disease, he had to send to boarding school when they came of age. He buried two of his wives with his own hands. He saw the little band of believers that the Lord would raise up scattered over and over again. In seemingly every possible way, Satan opposed the progress of the gospel in this man’s ministry. And, by the grace of God, he soldiered on to the very end. This is his legacy: the entire Bible had been translated into Burmese. There were dozens of missionaries in Burma through the American Baptist Convention society. His gospel tracts had been distributed to tens of thousands, and only to those who asked. Because of his influence thousands had come to faith. And his influence in Burma (now called Myanmar) persist even today, through His Bible translation and church planting. But, of course, his influence is most significant in heaven. Who knows how many countless Burmese are singing the praise of the Savior because of Judson’s pioneering influence? Only the Lord, but the Lord certainly does know.To the Golden Shore is Judson’s story. It is a fresh wind of refreshment to a soul weary and downcast with the worries of the world; we would do well to know it well. Why Should You Read?I have no small fascination with Adoniram Judson. I first learned of his story from John Piper’s biographical message in the summer of 2011. I continued to fuel my interest by reading Courtney Anderson’s account of his life (this book) in the summer of 2013, and posted many quotes from the book here. This year, I finished another biography, this one written by Vance Christie. And I still want more. Why? My intrigue is certainly influenced in some way by his daring, at times impetuous, courage for the sake of the gospel. It is due in large part to the fact that he was the one of America’s first foreign missionaries. And it is deeply tied to the fact that he was the first to preach the gospel, plant the church, baptize natives, and translate the Scriptures in Burma (modern day Myanmar). All of these are significant reasons, but it wouldn’t be the primary reason.Rather, to me, the greatest appeal is this: reading Judson’s life makes me dream again. It makes me dream the “foolish” thoughts of a fresh believer, of a Christian who sees what God can do as more real than what can be seen with the eye. It makes me again dream rightly, and say with a scoff, “What is sacrifice? What is cost? What is self-denial? What is pain? In the service of my God, gain!” It makes me dream again of doing impossible things by the power of the Spirit of God, of seeing nations bow the knee to Jesus Christ, of preaching the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, of giving my life unto this singular cause, of dying with the word, “Gain!” on my lips, of entering into the presence of my Master hearing, “Well done.” It makes me dream again of being faithful to the very end.Just how does Judson’s life make me dream? By way of reminder: the God who did the grand and spine-tinglingly glorious things in the past is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The God of Abraham is the same as the God of Adoniram Judson, and is my God. Judson’s life reminds me that never, ever, will any man ever out-dream God’s ability to glorify Himself. Never will it be that I could ever pray for something great, amazing, and glorious for God’s own fame, and He respond, “Oh sorry, I can’t do that.” He “is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 4:20). My Savior said, “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:13-14). We pray in His name — anything! — and He will do it. Do we believe it? Will we pray it?I need this reminder. And as long as the Lord tarries, I will need this reminder, for my soul is constantly forgetful and wandering from the Truth. May the Lord continue to raise up men like Judson, and through them, make His name great among the nations!Prerequisites/CautionsAnderson is shamelessly enthusiastic about Judson, and his eagerness shines throughout the entire narrative. This is perhaps the greatest strength of the writing: you can’t but be swept up into the passion. Yet, I suspect that much of Anderson’s insight into the thoughts and minds of the ‘characters’ is based upon extrapolation rather than research. For a more dispassionate (and in my opinion, much more boring) account of Judson’s life, read Christie’s biography Adoniram Judson. In addition, one should take note that in the 1800s, the Christian missionary culture was very different from modern day. In particular, it was not a scandal to send your children back to America for education, to be raised by extended family members. It was not a scandal to leave your spouse for half a year, maybe even years, at a time for the sake of the missionary endeavor. In fact, it was normative, even expected. The luxuries, or perhaps harmful, of technology like air travel and internet simply didn’t exist. These missionaries had to give up the comforts of wife and children; otherwise, the mission would fail.In addition, we would do well to refrain from naïve, ignorant criticism of so-called ‘legalistic’ missionary methods, in particular barring a new convert from begin baptized if they do not meet a certain level of commitment to Christ. History has shown that this practice, as well as others that American Christians might challenge, are for the good of the church.ReadabilityAnyone who can read this blog post should be able to read this book with ease. I do provide a fair warning though: if read correctly, you will spend hours tearing – both definitions of the word – through this book.QuotesSince this book is a biography, and lengthier than most of the other books I’ve reviewed, it would not be very profitable to list pages upon pages of quotes from each of the chapters. Instead, I will be content to quote a few relevant Scriptures that captive the essence of Judson’s life. God’s Word is the eternally relevant Word.Matthew 1037 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.Matthew 1929 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.Philippians 121 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

It never ceases to amaze me and thereby encourages me greatly in my walk with Christ, how God is in and works through complex situations, illnesses and disappoints. I testify that He is supremely sovereign and good. It is an honor to be His child and servant and the power of the gospel is simply true and Divine. I would not classify this book of some five hundred pages as a "page turner" but it reads well. The shorter chapters enable me to read it bit by bit or in larger doses if I prefer. God is teaching me about Himself and His unstoppable work through this book. It is my sole passion to bear much fruit for His glory (John 15). God bless.

This was NOT just about one or two people. It was about how the Baptist Religion first began. Why do many people call their deacons "Brother John or Brother ..." ? This books tells how that all started. It is rich in details of the war of Britain & Burma. It also explains about the First Congregationalist Church was started. It is also a biography, but has a lot more than that. It has love, marriage, children, death, war, East India Trading Company (A very big deal), Burma, America before Texas was a state. If you want a true history of the first church in America, read this. A great book. If my review has helped you decide, please click "yes".
