I'm a little over 100 pages in, and the author's already got me pretty much convinced. He presents a pretty tireless array of verses supporting his thesis, most of which are rendered with little to no meaning above an almost pointless poetic esotericism without his arctic interpretation in mind. I'm very impressed at just the sheer quantity of evidence he is able to point to in order to support his case. I would have given it 5 stars just for the amount of valuable information I'm getting, but there are minor issues with the printing: (I got the Arktos 2011 Edition) There are frequent typos, spaces or periods that don't belong, etc (neither of which impede the understandability of the text; not a big deal, but noticeable), AND, more frustratingly, the author makes references in the first couple chapters to different graphs and figures he drew out to illustrate his explanation of certain phenomenon related to precession which are not replicated in the text. Fortunately, I had read about these phenomenon before, and so was able to follow, with a bit of difficulty, and pick up the gist. Also fortunately, only a few pages each were devoted to talking about these non-replicated figures; it wasn't too big of a deal either. I'm glad I bought it, but, all the same, think the book's overall published quality could have benefited from a better editing process.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak is the Benjamin Franklin of India. He was an early advocate of Indian independence from Great Britain as well as a journalist, teacher, and scholar. In this work, Talak takes the Vedic Hymns and seeks to determine where the Indo-Europeans originated. His determination-somewhere north of the Arctic Circle. He makes his case by examining the hymns and applying what they say to known astrological data, historical climates, and past geologic conditions. It's a compelling case, especially when he compares Hindu myths to how the sky and stars appear in the far north. The book is dense with facts. In addition to the above, Tilak compares the mythologies of other Indo-European people to make his case along with some references to the Hebrew Old-Testament.A mind expanding book at a minimum.

A great book but poorly and lazily formatted, a more competent publisher would have been wonderful. As it is, its poorly formatted, footnotes appear in the middle of the page, symbols randomly appear. Tilak is a good writer and thinker and deserved better than this.

Mind blowing that history experience has been so narrowly awakened until I read Tilak's possibility (probability) that our cultures have evolved in a completely different scenario than usually portrayed

Undoubtedly, this book is very innovative. Written well beyond its perceived time - portions of the book seem futuristic. Bal Gangadhar Tilak's approach is innovative and quite non-traditional. Tilak definitely was thinking differently from his kinsmen when he wrote the book. Though his theory is not exactly accepted, but it definitely leaves room for thought. The text in the Vedas is not easily understood - pre-dated Sanskrit was Dev-Bhasa – spoken differently with fewer complexities than its morph in latter periods like the Axial times and the rest of CE. There is much that needs to be explored around the Vedas – beyond the dogmas into what may have prevailed at the time they were written. This book is perfect for those looking to seek answers without being bogged down by ritualism, dogmas and blind faith.

Too dense to read

Interesting view.

A unique mix of police procedural, personal memoir and political thriller, this true-life tale of the author's research into the death of CIA agent Freddie Woodruff makes compelling reading. The story involves complex post-cold war political intrigue, but the narrative is tightly driven by the core story of Pullara's investigation into the unsolved murder. A great read.

Freddie Woodruff was a CIA station chief in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, who was assassinated in 1993 on a remote highway outside of Tbilisi. Michael Pullara is a lawyer with years of experience in the field of international human rights. Their connection is the rural town of Searcy, Arkansas, where they both grew up.In 1993, Mr. Pullara happened on a New York Times article describing the death of Fred Woodruff. He recognized him as someone from a family he knew in Arkansas and wondered what this man had been doing in Georgia that led to his death and to the sham trial of the man accused of murdering him. This curiosity led to his self-styled “quixotic quest” for the truth behind the murder. And to the intriguing story of espionage and international legal wrangling. After extensive research and personal investigations on site, Mr. Pullara was satisfied that he had enough information to help Mr. Woodruff’s family understand what happened in 1993. But Georgia Woodruff Alexander, Fred Woodruff’s sister, learning that an innocent man was in prison, had a challenge for the lawyer who thought he had finished his work: “What are we gonna do, Michael?”Thus began the real work and the ultimate exoneration of the accused, Anzor Sharmaidze. We follow grueling, painstaking investigations and learn a lot about post-Soviet Georgia, Russia, the CIA, the FBI and international intrigue. It is a fascinating read which gives us detailed insight into the arcane and frightening world of espionageP. Day

I was familiar with the tragic death of Mr. Woodruff as I had worked at US Embassy Tbilisi in the 90s, and had been responsible for processing a number of FOIA requests related to the case. More recently, I thought the matter had been completely forgotten so I was pleased to see the a book had been written about it. I enjoyed the book and I think the author nailed the cultural and political complexities of the era pretty well. However, although there were certainly grounds to be suspicious, I think the author's opinion that Russian intelligence was behind Mr. Woodruff's death is just speculation based on poor analysis and questionable sources. More likely than not, the fellow who was convicted was probably the shooter who killed Mr. Woodruff when he took a drunken potshot at a passing car. Although I don’t agree with the author’s conclusion, this was a good read and would probably make for a good movie.

A most compelling read. Every page filled with political intrigue. A spider's-web of information about post-USSR/Georgian/USA cunning relationships all centered about the murder of a CIA agent. Kudos to the author for his perseverance in getting to the truth behind the murder of CIA agent Freddie Woodruff.

This is a Great Story, even greater because it is ALL TRUE. It required many years of research. It is interesting to learn about the world of spying.Michael Pullara is a great storyteller. I loved his word choices and descriptions of so many people, events and places. I see why reviews include the comment 'this is his first book.' This is spell binding reading. It will also make a great movie. The Russian names are a bit of a challenge. In the front of the book Mr. Pullara has put a key to all of the names. I kept a sticky note there to help me quickly check on people.

I stopped reading a little over a quarter of the book. I wanted to learn about this murder and how the various governments reacted to it. It was more about the author and his feelings. If there was a "hook" in the story to keep me interested, I could not find it by page 102.

Brilliant first person story. Riveting account of an unknown international incident on the personal level. Great detail. Superbly written. I could not put it down. Hopefully, the author will write more !

A complicated case, carefully told.

This is a really important book. Most photography books are solely concerned with cameras and lenses, but this book focuses (pun intended) on the psychology of the way images are interpreted and understood by people, which I think is far more important than equipment. The book is beautifully written and filled with gorgeous photographs illustrating the photographic and artistic concepts explained within. Photography has become bigger than ever before, and with the affordability of high-quality DSLRs and the image-sharing world of social media, everyone is a photographer today. In and of itself that is not a bad thing since Photography as a medium of documenting life as well as a medium for creative self-expression should be available to everyone. The problem, I feel, is that we've become too obsessed with technology, and we've forgotten that understanding the psychology and philosophy involved in all visual art is of paramount importance in creating images. Most books and YouTube videos are dedicated to catering to the consumer mentality. Everyone wants the newest, most expensive cameras with the most bells and whistles and highest megapixel counts, not realizing that you can take a great photograph with ANY camera, even point and shoot cameras and mobile phones. But the way to do that is to understand the elements of a good photograph and to think deeply about your compositions. That's where a book like this comes in. The author also wrote another book entitled The Photographer's Eye, which is equally a great book and also deals with the psychology of image making. Both books should be on the bookshelf of any serious photographer or artist.

I found this a very readable and informative book. As a serious photographer, currently enrolled in a three year professional photography program, the author's ideas and pictorial examples where thought provoking and provided creative seeds for my own exploration and image creation.Another feature of the book which I liked was Michael's recommended topics, concepts, or individuals to do Web lookups. I pursued some and learned much. This permits the reader to pursue his/her interests and makes the book itself easier to read.I read the Kindle edition and found both the layout and the orthography challenging. Where the author speaks about ideas or concepts related to a given image which in the printed version is probably on the same or opposite page in the Kindle edition you might find it several "pages" away which makes the dialogue harder to follow. This, coupled with misspellings and lack of capitalization of cities, towns and countries caused me to only give the book a four star rating

Having recently purchased and read both The Photographer's Eye and The Photographer's Mind by Michael Freeman, I will review both. Eye is easily the most helpful book I've read on photographic composition, discussing in clear terms framing, design basics, graphics, light and color, intent, and process. What I found especially helpful was the section on gestalt theory. While I have read about gestalt theory before, I have not found it quite so clearly discussed as here. Eye is a book to return to again and again.Mind, though it falters slightly near the end, for the most part maintains the same high level of quality as Eye in discussing "intent" and "style." Especially interesting is the section on beauty and the sublime ("Dead Monsters"), which dips into classical aesthetic theory going back to Burke, Kant, and Addison. In a book geared for the practitioner, such theorizing can easily go too far, but that is not the case here. In fact I could have done with a bit more classical theory. Even if one chooses to eschew classical principles, I believe it is better to do so knowledgeably than ignorantly. The cataloguing of styles is helpful. I found that I already use a number of styles in my photography, but I can now do so with greater awareness and confidence. I appreciated the web links throughout the book and the references to various photographers whose styles are discussed.I can highly recommend both books to amateur and advanced amateur photographers.

Michael Freeman is a genius of both photography and teaching. His books are works of art in there own right that can be savored over and over again for the pictures alone. However, if you can stop looking at the pictures long enough to read the books you can learn some amazing things. Michael is a prolific writer and I have many of his books but my three favorite are The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos,Michael Freeman's Perfect Exposure: The Professional's Guide to Capturing Perfect Digital Photographs, and this one. Each title perfectly captures what the books are about. If you want to learn more about composition then get the Photographer's Eye. Want to learn about Exposure, get Perfect Exposure. Want to learn more about composition and creative thinking, then get this book. This book is for the beginner and expert alike. However, it does assume a level of competence with a camera. You don't have to be an expert, you just need to know how to make your camera do what you want. So if you are looking for a book that tells you what to do then look elsewhere. This books are about thinking and in particular teaches you what to think about for advanced composition and creative thinking.People often get too wrapped around the axel about gear. If only they had a faster camera or more mega pixels or higher ISO, then they would be taking masterpieces. That could not be further from the truth. The cold hard truth is the best and fastest way to take better pictures is to one, take lots of pictures. A way to supercharge your learning in that process is to look at and study beautiful art and pictures. This book not only shows you amazing photos, it also analyzes the photos and explains why they are amazing photos and what he was thinking.I recommend all 3 of these books as masterpieces you will treasure and will, with practice, accelerate your learning process for taking great pictures.

The story he so compellingly recounts in SHADOWS IN THE VINEYARD breathes, like the hallowed wine at its heart, with life and history and wonder."―Benjamin Wallace, author of The Billionaire's Vinegar"Aubert de Villaine is the legend behind the legend. I have been torn between my competing impulses of not being able to put "Shadows in the Vineyard" down and a contradictory desire to extend the time it takes for me to finish this book for as long as possible so as to prolong its enjoyment. The character development and imagery are incredibly vivid and seamlessly melded across time and geography. When you combine this with a love of historical writing and historical fiction as well as crime and mystery novels, "Shadows in the Vineyard" has accomplished at least a trifecta of everything that is dear to me in a book. Although this book is non-fiction, it reads like a novel and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This book is beyond being entertaining, or informative. It is wise in a pragmatic, life-grit humanistic way, which I find preferable to the crystalline abstraction of philosophy. As I said, it is not a smart book – it is a wise book. To begin with, it is an unusually structured book, and, in essence, it is one continuous exposition from beginning to the end, with stories and facts offered unhurriedly, when they are needed. The pacing is perfect – not hectic-fast, yet not too slow either, requiring reader to slow down just enough to start appreciating the turn of language here and the turn of thought there, and simply start enjoying the process of reading it.Subject-wise, this book mixes history, agriculture, biography, and uses crime more as a pretense to expand on multitudes of topics. If anything, this book falls in line with a well-established literary tradition of books about nothing in particular but everything at once, written by what used to be called “men of letters”. Such mosaic of stories results in a “cumulative” effect, when by the end it grows bigger than the sum of its parts. In other words, one has to complete reading it in order to fully appreciate what a rare gem of a book this is. Which should pose no problem to anyone, unless a truly severe remission of ADHD gets in a way. I personally managed to finish the book in two sessions of about one hour and half each. Very Highly Recommended. Hope this helps.

The language with which vintners, connoisseurs, and critics talk about their favorite subject often resembles religious ecstasies, making the use of sacred wine for Christian communion services seem not only appropriate but completely right. In this book, which is "the true story of the plot to poison the world's greatest wine," however, author Maximillian Potter, a journalist, takes a much more secular approach to the subject, as he investigates the very real 2010 plot to poison the vines at the Domaine Romanee-Conti on the Cote d'Or. With its Pinot Noir regarded as the world's greatest wine, and its availability limited because the vineyard itself is small, the interest of sophisticated criminals in this wine is not surprising. At auction, a single bottle of Romanee-Conti from 1945 was then fetching as much as $124,000.The 2010 crime within the French vineyard itself is daring, potentially devastating to the vineyard, and both complex and time-consuming to pull off, as an unknown person or persons sets out to extort a million euros from M. Aubert de Villaine, the seventy-one-year-old "Grand Monsieur" who runs the Domaine with his cousin Henri-Frederic Roch. When Aubert de Villaine does not act upon receiving a message, the extortionist gives one last warning, providing more specific information and indicating that he has already drilled the bases of seven hundred vines and has already begun injecting them with poison. He will continue to do this if his terms are not met.Author Potter's broad approach to this subject resembles a compilation of stories about the vineyard, its owners, and its history, jumping back to the time of Louis XV and Madame Pompadour, and then jumping forward to the present, then toggling back and forth. While some might argue that such an approach slows down the narrative, others will treasure the insights gained into the whole subject of wine-producing. Throughout the book, Potter keeps the personalities of his subjects front and center, giving life to a subject which might otherwise feel static. King Louis XV, Madame Pompadour, and the Prince de Conti, an ancestor of the vineyard's owner and cousin of Louis XV, share space with scenes of the extortionist, living in a tiny eighty square-foot cabin carefully disguised on the de Villaine property, while two police try to discover who he is.In the last pages of the book, the author raises questions regarding the succession to M. Aubert de Villaine's position and who the choice may be. He talks about his own background and his reasons for writing the book and his opinions about wine critics with their elaborately over-the-top descriptions of wine, then describes having his first taste of Burgundy in the cellars of Domaine Romanee-Conti, with M. Aubert in decidedly different terms. He tells le Grand Monsieur: "This may sound crazy to you, but when I was a kid there was a candy called Pop Rocks. It was like candied sand and when you put it in your mouth, it sort of bounced around and filled your mouth. "[This wine] is like divine, liquefied Pop Rocks that make me feel lightheaded - the kind of happiness that I felt after I first kissed my wife."

This book exposes quite the caper. A bungled attempt by a not-so-clever French ex-con to extort money from one of the world's most prestigious wineries, the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC to its friends and lovers-and there are many). The author paints a very good, very considered portrait of DRC's proprietor Aubert de Villaine, a man of deep thought with an almost other-worldly connection to his vines, which in turn produce some of the world's most highly sought after Burgundies. The writing, while not great, is solid and tells the tale. If you're a fan of wine or of true crime stories, this one is worth the effort. Very good.
