Starring Jenna Coleman, Rufus Sewell, Tom Hughes, and a galaxy of other excellent British performers, "Victoria" covers the early years and the beginning of the reign of Queen Victoria. It is a magnificent production filmed with meticulous attention to sets and costumes. The companion is just as sumptuous, filled with stills of the cast in full costume. But this companion is far more than just a guide to "who plays whom." It includes contemporary prints and paintings of Queen Victoria and her forebears, as well as excerpts from her own diaries and letters. Most importantly, the companion contains superb historical commentaries by Helen Rappaport, a highly regarded historian well known for her twelve books on Victorian England and revolutionary Russia.Queen Victoria might never have been born. Her father was Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a younger son of King George III who had lived happily with his mistress for many years until 1817 when Princess Charlotte of Wales,at the time the King's only legitimate grandchild, unexpectedly died in childbirth. The necessity for an heir to the throne forced Edward and several of his brothers to abandon their mistresses and make suitable royal marriages. In Edward's case, his bride was a widowed German princess named Victoria who came from a large but impecunious family that ruled the small duchy of Saxe-Coburg. In May 1819 Victoria gave birth to a daughter who was named for her. In early 1820 the Duke of Kent suddenly died and his widow and small child were left alone at Kensington Palace, disliked and distrusted by the rest of the Royal Family. In such circumstances it was not surprising that the Duchess of Kent came under the influence of unscrupulous advisers like Sir John Conroy, and that the young Princess Victoria led a lonely childhood, depending on her German governess Baroness Lehzen for emotional support and friendship.Fortunately the young Princess was intelligent and self-reliant. As a teenager she faced down Sir John Conroy's attempts to dominate her, and when she succeeded to the throne in June 1837 at age 18 she was quick to take command. She removed herself from her mother's orbit by taking up residence in Buckingham Palace, formed a strong friendship with her first prime minister Viscount Melbourne, and established herself as a powerful voice in Government. She made many missteps, becoming overly infatuated with Melbourne and refusing to accept the realities of parliamentary politics, was involved in a sordid whispering campaign against one of her mother's ladies-in-waiting who appeared to be pregnant but was actually mortally ill, and was booed and hissed in public.One of Victoria's most important duties was to marry and produce children. She had two British cousins of suitable age, Prince George of Cumberland and Prince George of Cambridge, but fancied neither them nor a son of the King of Holland. She was tempted by the visiting Grand Duke Alexander of Russia, but eventually she was steered towards two German cousins, Princes Ernest and Albert of Saxe-Coburg, by her uncle King Leopold of the Belgians. As the television series depicts, Victoria's interest in and opinion of her cousins was mercurial and at first dismissive, but eventually she fell deeply and permanently in love with Prince Albert. They married in early 1840 and produced their first child, a daughter, later that year.That's where both the series and this companion end. The companion contains a great deal of interesting commentary from Rappaport, not only on the characters themselves but on Victoria's dog Dash, her wedding cake, and even the royal wet nurse. The commentary should deepen viewers' interest in many of the characters, such as the Duchess of Sutherland and Lord Alfred Paget, who are seen only briefly in the series but who Rappaport reveals to have been intelligent and multi-faceted people in their own rights. There is a final section dealing with the making of theseries, showing some of the sets and featuring stills from the production.This book is a well designed and scholarly work which will satisfy not only fans of the series but serious students of Queen Victoria's reign as well.

Beautiful photos of the PBS series and its actors. Gorgeously put together. The book is a testament to the series which I LOVE. However.... if you want to learn about the life and times of Victoria, this is not the book. There is a nice family pedigree and pictures of buildings where scenes were shot for the series, but little otherwise beyond what is in the series. I was disappointed that the book had little additional detail.

A beautiful hardback thick book!!! My daughter loves the show and this book was a must for her!! I like that it includes so much history and pictures of actual letters written by Victoria.

This series has great characters and character development. The stories are good and getting better. It feels authentic to the time period. The whole family loves it! This book has a short bio of each character. It has some cool snippets of actual letters from Queen Victoria. Great way to teach the kids some history in a way that isn't too dry and boring.

Watching the Masterpiece Theater production of Victoria made me curious about Queen Victoria and her life. This book identifies what is accurate and what was added for interest. It includes copies of Victoria's letters and describes the many people in her life. I recommend it.

This book is EXCELLENT! I loved the Masterpiece series and had just finished reading Victoria-the Queen by Julia Baird, which went more in depth about Victoria from her birth up to her death. I decided to buy this book also and discovered has a lot of interesting information about the Queen and her life. The end of the month I'm going to MegaCon in Orlando and hope to have Ms. Coleman autograph it for me!

Also bought this book for my wife as a present. She loved it. I should note that my wife is a librarian and reads as well as rates a lot of books. For her to give this an excellent rating is significant.

Beautiful book, love the photographs and the old pictures that go with the modern photos. Beautiful cover jacket and great information, not an overload of history for the type of book that it is. If you like the BBC series buy the book you will learn more about the people in the series.Daunn Munn

About the Author

Jonathan Katz is a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, and director of the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. He has published over 100 articles on cryptography, and serves as an editor of the Journal of Cryptology, the premier journal of the field. Prof. Katz has been invited to give introductory lectures on cryptography for audiences in academia, industry, and government, as well as an on-line cryptography course through Coursera. Yehuda Lindell is a professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University. He has published more than 90 articles on cryptography and four books, and has considerable industry experience in deploying cryptographic schemes. Professor Lindell lectures widely in both academic and industry venues on both theoretical and applied cryptography, and has been recognized with two prestigious grants from the European Research Council.

This is a serious introduction book. I enjoyed Katz's course on Coursera.Note this is theoretical. If you are looking for material on hardware or physical attacks like side channel attacks or fault injection attacks, you will need to look elsewhere. With that said, it is useful as a reference even after you have digested the material because Katz is very particular with rigor, notation, and word choice -- the result of a mathematician who cares about communication.

As a student enrolled in a Computer Security course and considering a career in Cybersecurity Engineering, I am finding the theoretical content of this book to be useful so far. Unfortunately, as a Linux user this ebook is more difficult to access than most others, as it is NOT COMPATIBLE with the Kindle Cloud Reader nor my Kindle device. I suspect my rating would increase if this product was made compatible with those devices, but I will continue reading this book on my smartphone screen.

I have not finished the book yet, but from material I went so far and from Jonathan Katz's course on Cryptography I think I can describe authors way of providing information. I would characterize it in two keywords: rigorous and complete. Other materials I have met were maybe more lively but this one is is the best if you are really serious about crypto. It will give all the details you need to understand and work with modern cryptographic primitives. I will teach how to prove or disprove properties of various cryptographic schemes.

A rigorous treatment based on clear assumptions and proofs derived from those assumptions. Mastering the topic is not easy, but Katz's writing is clear.

There's long been a vacuum in good books for the home fruit grower. "Grow Fruit" is the best book on the subject right now. It's comprehensive in breadth with adequate depth, and very well illustrated. Even off beat fruits like mulberries, quinces, etc. are covered. The information is accurate for the most part. Also, the downside risks are covered pretty well for each fruit, unlike the usual gushing optimism in other fruit books- you'll know the battles that lie ahead before you start.The one area where the book falls short is in variety information, which is crucial to success. You'll have to comb forums on the internet for that. Several examples are: mulberries where many varieties are placed on equal footing, but "Illinois Everbearing" and "Pakistan" are the gold standards; grapes where trouble prone vinifera's like "Flame" are given full coverage while only outdated labrusca's like "Concord" and "Canadice" are mentioned, instead of winners like "Jupiter", "Steuben", and "Glenora". (The Grape Grower: A Guide to Organic Viticulture by Lon Rombough is a must have to succeed with grapes.)Beginning to intermediate fruit growers should have this book in their library.

Laid out beautifully, this book is orderly, jam-packed with in-depth information on all stages of growing fruit plants and trees. "Grow Fruit" has given me a full education! I have put in three peach trees, two pears, and two citrus trees in my small yard, but was woefully short on know-how until now. Buckingham has given me the handbook, and I really appreciate the hard work it would take to put together such a fine book.I've purchased several books to teach me how to do it better, and have read several from my local library, but this one is the best I've seen. I highly recommend "Grow Fruit" to any gardener who wants to grow fruit trees and fruit plants. Nice work, Alan Buckingham! Thank you. (Ariel I.)

I rarely buy a book that costs over $5, preferring to wait until the price comes down to make it worth the purchase of it. But when I checked this book out of my library, I HAD to have it!! I have been researching growing fruit (on a small scale) for two years, and this year have planted my first fruit trees. I have read all kinds of articles and books, and this book is the one I had to get. First of all, the pictures are gorgeous! WOW - who wouldn't want to try growing all these wonderful looking fruits?!! There are tons of pictures, plus drawings, of the fruits in different stages, and many of them depicting different growing methods, and pruning (which can be scary).The book is laid out by fruit, with several pages devoted to sections about each (buying, growing methods, planting methods, pruning and training methods, "must have" varieties, routine care, etc), but my FAVORITE part is the section for each called "Season By Season". It gives an ordered list of what to expect from the plant each season, and lists the things you need to do each season! All that important information in one place, easy to find - it's great!! Another helpful section is at the back, called "Fruit Doctor", with lists (and pictures) of problems and solutions to them. Also, an A-Z of pests and parasites. I'm telling you, this book have everything you need to know, in one place and easy to find!! I LOVE IT!!If you are serious about growing fruit, this is the must-have book to start with....you may never need to buy another!!

This is an excellent how-to book for fruit tree owners. I learned so much; like how peaches only grow on last year’s growth, and 1-3 year old blueberry shoots are the most productive. The pictures and drawings make it really easy to understand the explanations of how to prune.

This publication is extremely helpful for the novice and that's me. It might be an older publication but the contents are still relevant today. Highly recommend to those who what to grow fruit without loosing out to the bugs.

For most readers, this is a well-organized presentation of all the things most important to know about growing many, but not all, kinds of fruit.I say "not all" because I'm in southern California, where the climate is almost un-American, and this book was sketchy on some of the fruit I have in my yard. (e.g. Cherimoya, Guava, Persimmon).But for mainstream, "apple pie" Americans, this book is a winner.This is one book where Amazon really ought to show you the table of contents. (And that's the main reason I didn't give it 5 stars.)

This book gave me the confidence to give fruit growing a shot. The pictures are beautiful but the really valuable parts for me are the diagrams of appropriate pruning. This was the mysterious and intimidating aspect of fruit tree cultivation for me. This book is the next best thing to having an old master right by your side showing you exactly where and how to cut.This Spring I planted a cherry tree and a peach tree in the yard (favorite pie types for my wife and me, respectively). They're growing like gangbusters! Next year I'm going to put in some apple and pear trees and get the vineyard started out on the hillside.

This book is definitely a must for a beginner like me... I like all the pictures! We don't have a huge yard but are trying to grow as many fruit trees our yard can handle and I wish this book would have been able to tell me the best location for each fruit tree using a typical house and a yard drawing of some sort... Also what we can do or how we can fit as many fruit trees as possible using a small yard. How about grouping companion fruit trees so we know which tree can be close to which or rival fruit trees that we have to be careful not to plant nearby...? Overall it's a great book!

About the Author

Joel Samaha is University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. He received his B.A. (History), J.D., and Ph.D. (History) from Northwestern University and studied under Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University, England. Professor Samaha was admitted to the Illinois Bar, briefly practiced law in Chicago, and then taught at UCLA. In 1971, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he served as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies for four years, taught television and radio courses in criminal justice, co-taught a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar in legal and constitutional history, was named College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher in 1974, and named University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007. Professor Samaha's works have appeared in Historical Journal, American Journal of Legal History, Minnesota Law Review, William Mitchell Law Review, and Journal of Social History.

I ended up dropping the course that used this book as it's sole teaching material because I couldn't trust whether the material was accurate. Some of the mistakes were careless, others were a blatant misrepresentation of a law. Example: page 121 cites a case study in which the Arizona Supreme Court reversed a conviction. However, as I read through the details of the case, I learned that the crime took place in Arkansas. I looked up Arkansas vs. the defendant's last name and sure enough, the conviction was reversed by the Arkansas Supreme Court. Careless mistake but if that case were referenced on a test, it leads to a wrong answer.On page 159-160, the textbook (through a hypothetical situation using real laws), states that it is illegal for anyone to bring more than $10,000 into the United States. Completely wrong. Bringing more than $10,000 into the US without DECLARING it is illegal. HUGE difference. It's like saying driving a car is illegal when in fact it is illegal to drive a car without a proper license.The price of this textbook fluctuates between $200 and $130 (new), for that price, it better be accurate. Considering that law is based on 'technicalities', then this book should be technically correct.

This book rental is good deal for daughter's college course, and a lot cheaper than buying the book, especially from her college bookstore.

I needed this textbook for my Criminal Law class. I understand the book is not new by renting it used. However, the book was nearly hanging by a thread when I rented it. After solely a semester with it, the entire book is unattached. Not happy with the money to rent to have a collapsing textbook.
