About the Author

Joel Samaha is University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. He received his B.A. (History), J.D., and Ph.D. (History) from Northwestern University and studied under Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University, England. Professor Samaha was admitted to the Illinois Bar, briefly practiced law in Chicago, and then taught at UCLA. In 1971, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he served as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies for four years, taught television and radio courses in criminal justice, co-taught a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar in legal and constitutional history, was named College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher in 1974, and named University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007. Professor Samaha's works have appeared in Historical Journal, American Journal of Legal History, Minnesota Law Review, William Mitchell Law Review, and Journal of Social History.

I ended up dropping the course that used this book as it's sole teaching material because I couldn't trust whether the material was accurate. Some of the mistakes were careless, others were a blatant misrepresentation of a law. Example: page 121 cites a case study in which the Arizona Supreme Court reversed a conviction. However, as I read through the details of the case, I learned that the crime took place in Arkansas. I looked up Arkansas vs. the defendant's last name and sure enough, the conviction was reversed by the Arkansas Supreme Court. Careless mistake but if that case were referenced on a test, it leads to a wrong answer.On page 159-160, the textbook (through a hypothetical situation using real laws), states that it is illegal for anyone to bring more than $10,000 into the United States. Completely wrong. Bringing more than $10,000 into the US without DECLARING it is illegal. HUGE difference. It's like saying driving a car is illegal when in fact it is illegal to drive a car without a proper license.The price of this textbook fluctuates between $200 and $130 (new), for that price, it better be accurate. Considering that law is based on 'technicalities', then this book should be technically correct.

This book rental is good deal for daughter's college course, and a lot cheaper than buying the book, especially from her college bookstore.

I needed this textbook for my Criminal Law class. I understand the book is not new by renting it used. However, the book was nearly hanging by a thread when I rented it. After solely a semester with it, the entire book is unattached. Not happy with the money to rent to have a collapsing textbook.
