My fiance is Jewish. I am not. We plan to have a primarily Jewish wedding, but given that Jewish weddings are fairly foreign to me and my loved ones, we also want to incorporate aspects of secular or Christian weddings. The rabbi that will marry us recommended this book, and I read it during a long flight from Dallas to San Francisco. There is a lot of useful information in this book, including examples of others' weddings and suggestions to help you start the process of planning the ceremony and what should be said and done.My only complaint is that the author focused heavily on Catholic/Jewish weddings. Given that I was not raised Catholic, I felt a bit left out of the author's explanations of how other couples made it work. I was hoping that, even if the author or their spouse was raised Catholic that research would be done into other denominations/faiths, particularly some in Protestantism. I realize that each denomination has its quirks, but even a general feel of what a Protestant/Jewish wedding would look like would be best.Other than that, I really do highly recommend this book for anyone looking to create a good, balanced wedding that truly celebrates aspects of each of your lives.
This is an EXCELLENT book for anyone who will be performing Interfaith Marriages. The contents provides great suggestions and is very thorough on both the Jewish side and the Christian side. When performing an Interfaith Marriage, the Officiant is only the Director and the Bride & Groom are the stars of the play. This book has taught me to always give the couple choices...and let them make the decision of what they want in the ceremony. Also, the pre-marital counseling....one must find out up front just how much support each will or will not receive from their parents. Very important!
I really liked this book, the beginning has a few chapters to read, and then it has a bunch of ceremonies in it (various denominations of Christain and Judaism), and then it offered several interfaith ceremonies. Each interfaith ceremony had clear "sections" and the last part of the book had alternate readings/prayers for each section. I was able to easily create my own wedding ceremony. It does give time estimations for the sample ceremonies.
After checking this book out of the library, reading and absorbing it bits at a time, I realized that I'd renewed it 3 times and I should just buy the thing. Rabbi Lerner offers sensitive options for someone planning an interfaith wedding, with thorough explanations of parts of the ceremony, (huppah, glass, etc) and detailed appendices of sample ceremonies, songs, rituals, etc. If there is a flaw in this book it is that there are some missing details--numbers to call to find willing rabbis, etc. However, I am anticipating dog-earring my copy once it arrives..._______ *addendum: My wedding was two weeks ago. In the month coming up to the big day, my husband and I found ourselves constantly referring to this book. We used it for reference, to pull ceremony details out, and as a reminder of stumbling blocks we would come across. Doubly recommended. Also check out the references in the back to find other readings. Finding good biblical readings we both liked was hard, so we ended up using secular stuff mostly.
I will be performing my first interfaith wedding in April. This book has been extremely valuable in assisting me in learning and understanding some of the Jewish traditions involved. Now if it could just teach me Hebrew!
My husband is a Rabbi who performs many Jewish/Interfaith wedding ceremonies, both here in the US and all around the world. He has found this book a MUST HAVE and doesn't know how he got along without it. I asked him for his referral notes and he just said "Buy it Now". For him, that is a wonderful review. There is so much to be considered when entering into a situation such as this, that he has found it invaluable.
While I have not read the book yet, a quick browse yielded plenty of good information. Also, I received the book at the early end of the delivery window. Thank you!

IT HELPED US CREATE A CEREMONY THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND HONORED BOTH OF OUR FAITHS WONDERFULLY. OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS LOVED THE CEREMONY THAT WE CREATED TOGETHER. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY COUPLE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS THAT ARE PLANNING TO MARRY.
