I really wish Phelps would go back to his roots and just write true crime. It seems like his recent books are more about himself than the crime he is writing about.
worst book I have read by Phelps- he was so redundant in this book. It you didn't hear it one time you heard it 10 times.So so boring. Not sure what happened other than he needed more pages to fill up- took me 3 weeks to finish!
I cant get used to the ever increasing judgmental sarcastic nature of this authors writing. His first books i found enjoyable, even keeled and maintained a more neutral presentation. He seems to get hooked into angry and defensive positions, especially when he thinks someone (in this case the deputy convicted of murder) is trying to control him. His appearance of righteous indignation detracts overall from the story. He does a nice job of telling her past history, childhood, and upbringing. Overall it is a very bizarre case which he does do a good job of pointing out areas that are strange - like the evidence perhaps being too perfect.
This is a different kind of true crime book in that as the author writes about this murder, the woman who was twice convicted for the murder of her on again off again boyfriend gives her side of the story too. The woman convicted of this murder swears to this day that she is innocent and there are certainly things that happened that seem to point to her innocence. The book was very interesting and kept me wanting to read more and more up until the last 20% or so. There at the end it seemed to get bogged down and I began to wonder if it was ever going to end. It has some really nice color pictures at the end which was very helpful in putting a name with a face. As a matter of fact, after seeing the pictures it left me with one question which was never really addressed in the entire book that really made me question whether or not the right person is in prison. Now I am really bothered and confused by it! IS the right person in prison?!? I would definitely recommend this book to other true crime buffs.
The one thing that kept running thru my mind was regarding the attempt to burn the house destroying evidence crucial to this mess, and it remains a mess. If the person or persons responsible for trying to start a fire using kerosene and whatever else they mentioned and were unsuccessful this doesn't make any sense at all. This whole scenario left me thinking that the killer or killers wanted it to look like Tracy tried and failed to get the job done, however, I felt as tho the killer or killers did not want to destroy any of the evidence that they were certain would cause Tracy to be charged and convicted of this crime ..........and made certain that this fire would not be a success. I cannot believe that her attorney of whom I felt was lazy and careless didn't go into this subject at all!
I love M William Phelps one of the best TC authors of our time. Im not sure why lately his book read "not as researched as before". I truly hope he turns it around are start to go back to his old style of writing!
The thing about narcissists is that they cannot help themselves... Phelps' bullying the accused is why he can't get a real publisher. His rant at the beginning would be amusing if he wasn't dead serious.
Beyond a doubt, Mr Phelps is the most amazing true crime author I've ever read. The time, research, and effort he puts into his books are evident in every book he writes. He is objective way of writing is fair and factual. This particular novel really affected me because it left me with just a sliver of belief that maybe Tracy Fortson is innocent.
