love this deck! Gorgeous pictures and the readings are quite accurate.

This is my 4th deck of oracle cards. My first deck was by colette baron reid (the map oracle cards) and I absolutely love and recommend them. I didn't order this deck because it was by the same author. I was just looking around at decks, and it just happened to be by the same author.I looked up the cards ahead of time to see if i could "work" with them. They do look beautiful. I like the silver edges and the black, but I guess between the time I placed the order, and the time I got the cards and looked through them, I didn't feel as drawn to them as I did a week ago.I do feel a little bad for putting 3 stars. The cards look beautiful. I did a few quick readings, but the cards I got just felt very abstract/random and very hit or miss for me. The card description in the book seems a little too short (I guess this would be good for those who like room to interpret their own meanings.) I just can't connect to what the card is trying to tell me. :/Some things work better for others I guess. And considering that most of the reviewers seemed to connect well with this deck, It's unfortunate that I couldn't also :/.---Revised 8/8/13I feel a little more intuitive since the last time I used the cards.. so I decided to try another reading. I took the cards out and the bottom card was "denial", it stuck in my mind and when I shuffled and pulled a card from the middle.. it was denial. This happened exactly like the other reading i did with my other deck too! The denial card's description fit perfectly with what I've been telling myself and thinking for a while. Yet it wasn't exactly "denial" as how most see it, but what struck me was the don't "get caught in your desire to reach your goal too soon. You may choose sour fruit that only looks ripe and juicy."You have to remember that we already KNOW what we need, want, etc consiously or subsconsciously. Yet sometimes it's difficult to bring it forward and oracle cards, tarot, etc are tools that help you find the answer more clearly.It was.. in my eyes.. a perfect card for me right now. Since I did a past present and future, all I can agree to were the past and present. But I see where the future is headed and at this point I agree. I also did a where am I now and it was related (denial.)So I raised this to 4 stars. I don't see myself using this deck often though. It has silver edges, but it has tiny silver dust that falls on your hand like glitter. So that makes me hesitant to use this deck. I don't like glittery things.. it freaks me out. It is smaller than glitter but I don't like the "mess" haha.

I've never complained about cardstock before (for instance, I feel that Lo Scarabeo decks are perfectly adequate), but this is straight terrible. If you go to a craft store and buy value papercrafting solids, you'll get this. It's not even as heavy as a cheap blank greeting card.The corners are sharp. I should have looked more closely at the customer images, because a couple do show this. Unfortunately, you can't just round them without damaging the gilding -- which, incidentally, is stuck in little pieces to the front of some cards.The images are perfectly nice. I definitely don't hate what the deck IS, just what it's ON. I had such a hard time picking out an oracle deck (not huge, not appropriative, no slurs, no angels) that I'll stick with it and try it out. The deck concept is probably a solid 4 stars, but production crapped out.

Colette Baron-Reid is absolutely one of my favorite oracle card authors! P.C. Cast and her make a great team! I was not sure about buying these cards, originally, because I was afraid the messages would be too dark, but the artwork was too gorgeous to pass up. And when I finally got these, the messages were loving and wise. It helped me to embrace the light and dark sides of my personality equally, and realize that both sides are just as loving and valid. I have not read, nor seen, any of the House of Night stories, but these cards still speak to me, greatly. They are so insightful and moving, and most of my readings have been extremely accurate. I am still waiting for some predictions to come true, but many of them have come true, already. I did not know who Nyx was, before I used these cards, but am grateful to be introduced to her. The wisdom that the authors voice as Nyx is extremely valuable! This has helped me to heal so many aspects of my life! Plus, the artwork on these cards are truly amazing! I wish that P.C. Cast created more oracle cards, and that the illustrator created more as well.

I love this deck. If you didn't read the house of night series it may be a bit hard to relate and understand the cards without the hand book. If you did read the series than use your knowledge of the books to relate and to see what the images and cards are telling you. The art work is amazing and thus is now my favorite deck, ever. Love, love, love it.

Nice Oracle cards, the art is beautiful. The idea may have come from a novel book series but I dont pay attention to that as the messages and the photos give plenty of intuitive information that is extremely handy and most times very accurate. I do recommend these cards. They will likely go up in price as they become popular so... grab yours now!!

I just got the deck less then a hour ago and I love it. The art work if georgious and the silver sides are a wonderful touch. I love the House of night series and am thankful to be able to get my hands on something like this. Only thing I don't like is not all members of the nerd herd are represented in the deck. Would of really liked it if there was a card for Jack, Orox, Stark, Damien you get the idea. Still I think this is a amazing deck and plan to enjoy it for years to come.

I purchased these cards because I am a House of Night fan, and the supplemental materials are always a joy when it comes to series I like. I was stunned by how gorgeous these cards actually are. They are glossy and gorgeous, feeling solid. The box is also a good heft and weight, and doesn't feel cheap at all. The small book is very nice, and easy to read and understand. The art on each card is unique and delightful, and the silver edges give them a nice, classy touch. These cards are my new treasure, and if you're a HoN fan, I declare them to be a MUST have, even if you don't use them for any actual readings. Very, very pleased!

There’s no yeti in the “story” except for the title and cover. Each page is a different animal and some rhymes don’t even work. “Banana” and “llama” do not rhyme. The book has no plot to speak of and it abruptly ends with no conclusion. Not well written but great textures and illustrations. Buy Never Touch a Spider or Never Touch a Monster instead.

My 23 mo. old grandson loves this book. Cute story. Short. Sweet. Made to last with toddlers handling. It is interactive, and fun and the the textures add so much, as my grandson loves to help turn the pages and feel all of the textures with his little fingers. Very durable.

After living in Lesotho and working in Mokhotlong with TTL, this brought back amazing memories. As soon as he described the secret alarm in the cars, I laughed. Borrowing another person's car meant knowing where the secret button was, and sometimes you couldn't find it which meant exactly what happened to him. Thank you for writing this book and reminding us about the small things in Maseru and beyond! Great read!

Will McGrath turns out phrases like no one else: wry, sweet, with pace and a light touch. Plus, the content is also sublime: you can see and hear and feel what it's like in Lesotho. You'll fall in love with all the people he met, the children he taught. It's non-fiction, but romantic. I can't wait to see what he writes about next.

The author takes you on a journey through his Lesotho, personalizing every character and leaving a firmly etched imprint of the people and places he met along the way. It is a sincere love letter to a faraway place. The vignette style makes it approachable for a reader with only short bursts of time to read. It will make you cry (or at least glaze your eyes over a little), and it will make you laugh.

This is a delightful read on many levels. First, it has a documentary-like , travelogue feel that transports the reader to a little-known place of warm, hand-holding people suffering under incredible percentages of the AIDS virus.Secondly, it is a humorous, relatable tale of 20 months spent in a completely different culture.And last but not least, it is a great read due to the author's ability to make vignettes out of his experiences, small pictures of exquisitely detailed events that make a series of very enjoyable stories.

This book is so beautiful. Transporting, poetic, hilarious, and sad. The author feels like a best friend you’ve never met, and the people of Lesotho, the tiny country you never really considered, feel like an intimate part of your human family through his loving and unflinching words. This is the kind of book that makes the world grow smaller and the human heart grow bigger. I’m nearing the end, and I wish it would last longer. I keep finishing chapters and wiping tears from my eyes. I can’t wait to share it with friends!

Equal parts educational and inspiring. Will McGrath's account of his first year in the African kingdom of Lesotho captures the beauty of human curiosity and compassion. I laughed, I cried, I read my eyes out. There isn't a single wasted sentence in the entire book and the verbs are stunning. I loved every page and would highly recommend to anyone interested in reading engaging essays.

The best English translation I've read of "Public Enemy" aka "Enemy of the People". The other translations that I've read are by Le Galliene and by Meyer. I have not yet read the other two plays included.

This volume brings together three of Henrik Ibsen's most important plays: _Ghosts_, _A Public Enemy_ (also known as _An Enemy of the People_), and _When We Dead Wake_. Ibsen is one of those authors who almost require the reader to place himself or herself in the age during which the works were produced. An unsuspecting reader may dismiss these plays as uninteresting, but one must keep in mind that Ibsen's work represented in its time the most significant transformation of the theater since Shakespeare. We're talking about the move from poetry to prose (though Ibsen did produce several plays in verse at the beginning of his career), about the presentation of characters who have "ordinary" problems such as troubled marriages and debt, about the introduction of ideological/social discussion between the characters. While _A Doll's House_ (1879) is undoubtedly Ibsen's most famous play, the three works collected in this volume allow the reader to appreciate three different facets of Ibsen.Ibsen's career could be divided into three stages. He began writing plays in verse, of which modern readers generally read two: _Brand_ (1866) and _Peer Gynt_ (1867). The second stage begins with _The League of Youth_ (1869), which represents Ibsen's departure from dramatic verse and the beginning of his career as a realist/naturalist. His most famous plays (_A Doll's House_, _Ghosts_, _An Enemy of the People_, _The Wild Duck_) belong to this period. Finally, towards the end of his career Ibsen produced what he himself called "portrait plays;" instead of presenting the individual in conflict with society, these works tend to focus on a character's inner struggle. _The Master Builder_, _Little Eyolf_, and _John Gabriel Borkmann_ are examples of this last Ibsenian phase. The titles may not ring a bell, for the simple reason that very few people read these works. _When We Dead Wake_ is something else: as its subtitle indicates, it constitutes a "dramatic epilogue." It amounts to a summing up of Ibsen's career, and critics speculate that the author may not have meant for it to be performed on stage.Here's my take on the three plays collected in this volume:* _Ghosts_ (1881): A revolutionary and scandalous play when it came out, it may now seem a bit melodramatic, contrived, and even a bit clumsy. Here are some of the themes treated: incest, illegitimate children, venereal disease, euthanasia, free love, and marriage as hell on earth. We're not exactly walking on sunshine here. Mrs. Alving, who for years endured the torture of a loveless marriage, stands for modernity; Pastor Manders represents tradition. The action is concerned with the return of Mrs. Alving's son Osvald, who is suffering from a devastating illness. Also important are the maid Regina Engstrand and her father, a carpenter who dreams of setting up a lodging-house for seamen. The main theme of the play is summarized by the biblical dictum: "The sins of the fathers are visited on the children." (Naturalism tended to reduce human beings to products of the environment in which they lived.) One thing I liked about this play: the open, ambiguous ending. Incidentally, the title "Ghosts," as the translator Peter Watts points out, is not exactly accurate; "Revenants" is closer to the Norwegian "Gengangere," which means "those who walk again," "those who have come back."* _A Public Enemy_ (1882): A direct response to the outrage that _Ghosts_ provoked among audiences. While _Ghosts_ is an example of drama, _A Public Enemy_ has been called a comedy. I would call it a tragicomedy. It is also an allegory. The action concerns Dr. Thomas Stockmann who realizes that the water of the baths the town depends on for revenue is polluted. It is his moral responsibility to make this inconvenient truth public, but this would naturally cause great harm to the town's economy. To make matters more complicated, Dr. Stockmann is the mayor's brother; this is not only a social issue, but a family matter as well. The allegorical nature of the play is not difficult to perceive: Ibsen is the man exposing (with _Ghosts_) society's filth. He is doing it for the good of society, so that things will change for the better, but society doesn't see it that way. (Naturalism was often quite didactic.) _A Public Enemy_ is much more complex than _Ghosts_. It is a political as well as a social play. One of its messages is that people live in a system that is a web, and that everyone (the individual, the government, the media) is held together by interests. Few people dare go against the establishment. Like Plato, Ibsen speaks against the idea that the majority is always right. The play includes some harsh lines against the liberal majority (Arthur Miller altered some of this in his version of the same play), and describes the political party as a "sausage-machine" (I couldn't help thinking of Pink Floyd here.) _A Public Enemy_ contains some problematic ideas and quite a bit of self-pity, but then one has to understand what Ibsen was going through at the time. A famous Ibsen line comes from this play: "The strongest man in the world is the man who stands most alone."* _When We Dead Wake_ (1899): This "dramatic epilogue" is Ibsen's attempt at symbolism. Professor Arnold Rubek, a sculptor, is bored with his wife Maia. While both spend time at a mountain health resort, he comes across a woman from his past, Irena, who used to model for him. Thanks to her, Rubek produced his masterpiece, a sculpture titled "Resurrection Day." The sculpture, however, has changed with time: now Irena's figure does not occupy the central space, but has receded into the background. Rubek is fascinated by Irena and tries to get back with her, with his wife's permission (the three of them plan on living together, it seems), while Maia herself goes off on adventures with a bear hunter named Ulheim. Maia represents prose drama; Irena, verse drama, which Ibsen abandoned (or it deserted him). The play is thus an allegory of Ibsen's sense of guilt at not pursuing poetry, the initial phase of his work._A Public Enemy_ was my favorite of the three plays. I haven't given the book five stars because, as I said, (1) _Ghosts_ seems a little contrived to me and quite melodramatic, and (2) there's a considerable amount of self-victimization going on in _A Public Enemy_.I have read that several authors (George Bernard Shaw among them) and critics consider _The Wild Duck_ (1884) to be Ibsen's masterpiece. The less-known _Rosmersholm_ (1886) is also highly regarded. I will read these plays, hopefully soon, and offer my opinion in the appropriate place.Despite their imperfections, these plays represent Ibsen at his best. Ibsen is credited, along with August Strindberg, with the creation of modern drama; the former gave rise to the realist/naturalist tradition, while the latter was instrumental in the development of symbolism. (Eugene O'Neill is a good example of a playwright who learned much from both.) These dramatic movements ruled the stage at least until Luigi Pirandello and Samuel Beckett showed up. Interestingly enough, Ibsen did not receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. The honor went, instead, to his compatriot Bjornstjerne Bjornson. The entrance to the National Theatre in Oslo is guarded by two monuments: that of Bjornson to the right, and that of Ibsen to the left. Time has been much more generous to Ibsen. This does not necessarily mean anything in itself (the work of many mediocre authors survives, while many works of genius are forgotten), I'm just stating a fact.Thanks for reading, and enjoy the book!

I bought the cello-piano-duet version of this book. Another reviewer stated that the piano is the main instrument in the duet, so I thought this would be perfect. I would play the piano, and my son could join me with his cello when he wants to. HOWEVER, I disagree that the piano is the main instrument in these arrangements. Yes, the piano accompaniment is much more complex than the cello. Of course it is. It has to be. But the piano arrangements are not complete, stand-alone pieces. They don't work without the cello part. Which is fine, and makes sense. Just giving a heads-up so other buyers will know what they are getting!

I bought this after reading the 8 reviews here. I agree with most of them, including the detachable violin book. My 8-year-old is doing violin, but hasn't quite gotten the incentive to play to this book yet. My 4-year-old, who isn't taking any music lessons, loves to listen to the CD.But what I didn't expect was the lifeless accompaniments. The lead violin part is played satisfactorily by a real violinist with expression and tasteful vibrato. However, the background symphonic music has irritatingly fake horns, woodwinds and other instruments that are obviously done on a synth or computer. They are so hollow and robotic that I wonder if they were MIDI tracks played back on a computer and not even played by a real person on a real synth. They must not have had the budget to hire a real orchestra to record those tracks in a real studio.Update: I forgot to mention that like another reviewer, my CD also has the clicking noises on tracks 25, and 28 through to the last track. It's extremely annoying, as one of the affected tracks is the Cantina piece that my daughter enjoys. This tells me that their CD master has the defect, and they haven't fixed it. I downgraded my rating from 4 stars to 2 stars because of this.

Bought this for my wife. She loved it. Great learning tool. The arrangements are made so that the instrument (cello in this case) plays the main melody. It's obviously not perfect since the orchestra uses multiple instruments, but it's pretty close. The included CD is cool, clearly synthesized instruments, but not bad. It did clip a little in my speakers, so the sound quality wasn't what I would have wanted. Again, this is great for learning a new instrument or just having fun.

My son plays the saxaphone and was wanting something different to play besides what he does in school. Being a huge Star Wars fan, he really wanted this music. I was worried that it might be too difficult, but he has loved the challenge. The CD is very helpful for him. I have heard him in his room practicing a song, stopping to listen to the CD, and then saying, "Oh, that's how it goes!" We know what the song sounds like, but not necessarily how the saxaphone will sound. He is learning to play one of the songs now as a solo piece for honor band try outs.

This review is for Star Wars A Musical Journey Episodes I-IV Instrumental Solos, with CD. I purchased the cello version of this sheet music. This book includes standard piano accompaniment, plus the solo cello music also comes inside the book as a removable insert. The printing quality is excellent.The CD is well thought-out and organized. The CD musical accompaniment quality is good -- not the terrible midi tones you get with some sheet music. Each song has the recorded "demo" version of the song, then another track with the "play along" version, which is like the "demo" version without the cello.I deducted one star because the CD failed at track 29. I tried it on three different computers, and could only access the first 28 tracks. I emailed the publisher (Alfred)recently and am waiting to hear back. Even withouth the last few tracks, I was able to access the music for the most popular songs. These included "Star Wars main theme," The Imperial March, and Across the Stars.++++ Update 6/17/2011 ++++ I recieved an email and a replacement book from Alfred. The CD in the replacement book was flawless. Very good customer service.I would highly recommend this book.

This is freaking awesome. These songs are really amazing, and they aren't too too hard to play. Some are really challenging though, which I like, personally. It gives you something to keep working towards. I think the recordings sound great myself. The "Across the Stars" especially is really soulful. I think I get what some people were saying about a midi sound with the higher trumpet tones, but it still sounds great to me, and anyway it's really fun to play with! That's all that really matters to me since I'm not going to play the backup tracks for a public performance, though not saying you couldn't. I love it!

Purchased for my horn playing daughter. She loves it and it encourages her to practice more often because she loves playing the songs. For a person who has played just 3 years, some of the songs are a little bit tough, but there are plenty of other songs that are easy to play.

Unfortunately, my son was rapidly losing interest in playing violin; however, provided this purchase, he has recaptured his desire to play with a passion.
