About the Author

Clemens Bartollas, Ph.D., is professor of sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a B.A. from Davis and Elkins College, a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in sociology, with a special emphasis on criminology, from The Ohio State University. Dr. Bartollas taught at Pembroke State University from 1973 to 1975, at Sangamon State University from 1975 to 1980, and at the University of Northern Iowa from 1981 to the present. He has received a number of honors at the University of Northern Iowa, including Distinguished Scholar, the Donald McKay Research Award, and the Regents’ Award for Faculty Excellence. Dr. Bartollas, like his coauthor, is also the author of numerous articles and more than 30 books, including previous editions of Juvenile Delinquency (Allyn & Bacon, 2006), Juvenile Justice in America (with Stuart J. Miller; Prentice Hall, 2011), and Women and the Criminal Justice System (with Katherine Stuart van Wormer; Prentice Hall, 2011). Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and both master’s (1970) and doctoral (1974) degrees, with special emphasis on sociology, from The Ohio State University. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminology and criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke; for the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university’s Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. The university named him Distinguished Professor in 1991. Dr. Schmalleger has taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping to build the world’s first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Schmalleger helped develop the university’s graduate programs in administration of justice as well as security administration and loss prevention and taught courses in those curricula for more than a decade. I was shocked that online you see a couple of pages showing a fly going by a child near the lake...the fly has a frog going after it then the cat is after the frog, then the dog chases the cat. OK. But, the next pages get very scary with violent actions. the pig tries to bite the dog, the cow is trying to hit the pig. Midway thru, "but some one bad has made us run! He wants to kill my Little One".."I told the fox Oh, shame on you...you want to kill the little cow! You stop, or I will whip you - NOW"...it gets worse..."This is why I ran - Back in the woods I saw a man! I saw a man! He had a gun! He wants to get me! Let me run!" Followed by several pages of a man with a gun....Violent messages throughout the book. I was shocked at the content of this book.

My son, who is now 41 years old, loved this book. It was among his favorites. He was about 2 yrs old when we started reading it to him. Now I bought a new copy for my granddaughter who is about the same age. There are nice pictures, a real story line, appropriate for young children.This is one of those food-chain books where the bigger animals are chasing the smaller animals. There is a lot of room in this book for interaction with the child. Very quickly they learn which animal comes next. It is a long book and the child will have to exhibit some patience. But nobody says you have to read the whole book at once. This is a good addition to a child's library.

I love this book!!! I'm 62 years young, and when my son was little I bought it for him and he liked it too. Gave a copy to my nephew & niece and they loved it too. When they grew up and became parents I gave it to their kids, who also liked it. Hey, it's a wonderful book for all ages!!! :) I gave one to my granddaughter recently and she said, "Gramma Sassy you already gave this book to me"!! I told her that I would return it and she said not to because she can keep that one at her other gramma's house. She loves this book.

I loved this book as a child, and my children love it now. It's really nice. The rhymes are fun, the story funny, and there's a lesson to be learned, too... About fake news and ensuring you get all the facts before jumping to conclusions, and things like that.I personally bought a used book. There was one page that had a dog ear in it. Other than that, the book felt brand new. Very happy with this purchase.

This has been a favorite of my family for over 45 years. Now that my children are grown and gone on with their families I have a new little on to share A Fly Went By. My old copies have somehow disappeared so here I am again ordering this delightful story with a new little one. This story is as exciting as Wacky Wednesday and McEligot's Pool. I love the old Seuss stories.

My grown daughters loved this book when they were little. The copy we had was in such bad shape from use. Over the years, I always remembered this book. With the birth of my grandchild, I started a Grandma Library with all the books my three children read over their childhood - going back 30 years. I have a great collection of books. Well, my granddaughter went into my box of "Grandma" books and pulled this book out. She is almost two years old. After reading this to her about 20 times, she still can't get enough of it. She loves the sing song rhymes for the "chase". She also loves that it is a little sheep with a tin can that is causing all the commotion. She says goodbye to all the animals, frog, fly when they part ways. She also loves that the "hunter" is wearing his underwear and slippers.I find this book holds up after the years we have had it in our family, to the multiple reading with my granddaughter. It is wonderfully written, with illustrations that are great! That pig!! what a page.I hope you enjoy this as much as my family. No violence, except at my granddaughter's age, I said hurt instead of kill. I feel the message of communication and aiding is more an important lession than showing a man with a gun. Remember ET? trying to remove the guns? How pointless that was?

One of my favorites from my own childhood. I'm so happy to have found this book again. It's rhyming is good - steady and oredictable, just what kids need who are learning to rhyme. The growing sequence of animals gives great memory practice. And it has a happy ending. It's just an all around great little book.

The absolute best book. I received my first copy as a young kids and read it so many times. Absolutely loved it. Just bought a bunch to give to nieces and nephews as they learn English. I hope they love it as much as I did/do.

Became infatuated with aviation after finally getting high speed internet in my neighborhood. Was on Youtube constantly, watching all types of aviation videos. Getting my PPL is still pretty far out of my reach, but the price was right for this book - definitely helped me in my quest to learn as much as I can. I learned alot of things from this book that I never even heard of, even after 2 years (easily over 100 hours) worth of Youtube videos! Jason is one of the best instructors out there, IMO - I can confidently make that assessment just from watching his videos, and reading this here book. It's an absolute bargain in the aviation world, that I know for sure! Buy it - you won't regret it!

Enjoyed this simple to read guide to becoming a pilot. Jason makes everything easy to understand. He makes the complex accessible, and really cares about his audience. I love watching the MzeroA.com videos on FaceBook and YouTube, and even got to meet him at OshKosh last year. He and the whole team are friendly, and very helpful. I ordered a few copies for my nephews in the hopes that they may find careers in aviation. With the pilot shortage, there should be lots of good paying jobs for those who pursue flying. Also a fun hobby, if you already have a career, and this book lays out a road map, no matter what your aviation goals are.

Great information I have been a pilot since 2001. I got this book because I had not flown for a few years and was in the process of becoming current. This book helped me during this process and I would recommend this book to both student and rusty pilots. On a side note. If you have not flown for several years be aware your piloting skills deteriorate dramatically. Took me around 7 hours of dual to feel comfortable in the plane.

The author, Jason, is extremely knowledgeable and has written the perfect primer for anyone looking to start flight training. His advice is solid, pertinent, and timely. He could easily charge 10x this amount and it would still save you a ton of time and money. If you're thinking about starting flight training, start here!

From interviewing and hiring your CFI, to basics and timing of events, this book covers enough. Jason incorporates the process of flight planning into planning your course for achieving your goal of obtaining your private pilot license. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

The Gilded Chalet: Off-Piste in Literary Switzerland by Padraig Rooney is a non-fiction book where the author writes interesting anecdotes about famous writers who have lived, and were inspired by Switzerland. The author, a teacher at an international school and has won awards for his poetry.The Gilded Chalet: Off-Piste in Literary Switzerland by Padraig Rooney is an interesting and well written book. Not only does the author delve on literary greats, but also about Swiss culture, their affinity for order, espionage, money laundering and, of course, neutrality.Mr. Rooney, an adopted child of Switzerland, likes his country very much. He writes about places and people in an easy to understand language, and paints a vivid pictures in the reader’s mind. The author uses contemporary culture icons (and pop-culture as well) to help the reader envision those he writes about (Jean-Jacques Rousseau is written of as the Salman Rushdie of the 18th Century).The book was written in English, but if I didn’t know better I could have sworn it was a translation. There is just some exotic about translated books, the language which tries to capture the original but no sound foreign, which this book has.For any lover of literature and trivia, this book is a gem. Not only about literary greats, but also about Switzerland and the morose atmosphere so conducive to espionage and financial shenanigans. As a fan of James Bond, I found the chapter about Ian Fleming fascinating, but to my surprise not necessarily my favorite, that was kept for the wonderful section about Isabelle Eberhardt, whom I never read but certainly want to now.

This book does not tell you what type of yarn is suitable for each project. The thickness of the yarn is going to be a major factor in whether you achieve the correct gauge for the project. The author neglects to tell you how much of that yarn you will need. If you run out of your prefered yarn before you finish the project, the new yarn is unlikely to match the original skein. This is why yarn wrappers state the dye lot information, so you can match the colors for your project. The only good thing I can say about the book is the price. When I foudn the book on Amazon, the price was ZERO. This is a good reflection of the quality of the book. If you are contemplating spending real money, skip this book and visit your local library instead.

So I bought my mother a Kindle reader for her birthday. She said: Thank you, son! Now what do I do with it? She loves to crochet, and when I saw this book, I bought it and downloaded it for her. She loves it! Now she's become a Kindle addict! And it all started with this professionally edited book. It really is a joy to read, and anyone who loves crochet will get something out of it. Anna Cross has made the art of crochet so easy to learn. Just follow along with the well-illustrated diagrams throughout the book. Easy!

This e-book is absolutely worthless. The patterns are basically just copied and pasted from moogly or pinterest, and many are incomplete, with no yarn type, hook size, or gauge listed. Very disappointed, even for $0.99!

I had high hopes for "Crochet Books: 30 Crochet Patterns In 30 Days" by Anna Cross. Unfortunately, like so many knit/crochet pattern ebooks, this one is nothing more than 30 patterns Ms. Cross found free online, copy/pasted, reworded, then renamed. I located many of the patterns online and discovered a significant number of discrepancies - lines of instruction completely missing, instruction incorrectly rewritten, critical information omitted, pictures of finished project that don't go with the instructions, UK instructions not translated for US crochet, and more. I would NOT recommend this book for beginners because it contains too many errors and omitted information which a beginner wouldn't spot.The original pattern instructions have been converted from traditional crochet abbreviations to everything written out. I find the instructions to be unnecessarily long, cluttered, and hard to follow. But some people prefer "written out" instructions. Longer instructions need to be carefully proofed for accuracy and clarity as it would be easy to miss a single repeat of a pattern, misplace a comma thereby changing the meaning, etc.Example from ebook of abbreviation vs. written out:Round 2: Ch 1, place marker, [sc in next 8 (10, 12) sts, 2 sc in next st] twice. Join with slip st [20 (24, 28) sts].rewritten asRound 2: Chain stitch then place marker. Single crochet in next 8 (10, 12) stitches, 2 sc in next st twice. Join this with a slip stitch [20 (24, 28) sts].In the example with abbreviations, it's easy to see the bracketed stitch sequence that is to be repeated twice. The long version isn't quite as clear about it. How would a beginner know to work the full sequence twice and not just work "2 sc in next st twice"? Yes, the end of round stitch count would answer that, but that's a bit much to expect from a beginner.Here are the original patterns I located after doing a quick search:o Mitten Pattern is "Crochet Mittens for All" WR2166 from Red Hearto Bootie for Babies is "Cat's One Piece Wonder Bootie" from cats-rockin-crochet.blogspot. The original site has great "how to" progress pictures which would benefit someone new to crochet. The special notes from the pattern designer were eliminated in this book.o Children's Cowl is "Kiddo's Crochet Cowl" LW4890 from Red Hearto Dishcloth is "Hexagon Washcloth" 80292AD from Lion Brando Mug Holder is One Stitch Mug Cozy" L32362 from Lion Brand. As another reviewer pointed out, the picture doesn't go with the instructions. The pic clearly shows 3 different stitches while the pattern only uses 1.o Gift Bag is "Valentine's Day Gift Bag" L40733 from Lion Brando Phone Case picture doesn't go with pattern based on the flap shown in the picture.o Streak Shawl is "Blue Streak Shawl" L40137 from Lion Brando Clutch is another example of the picture not matching the instructions. The pic comes from the "Mia Amor" Crochet Clutch Pattern offered on Craftsy for $6.o Potato Chip Scarf pictured doesn't match the instructions. The pattern won't create a scarf that full. The pic and pattern come from Lion Brand and Red Heart.o Warmth Cuff is "A Touch of Warmth Cuff" 90452AD from Lion Brando Envelopes is "Valentine Envelope" 81111AD from Lion Brando Patchwork Bag is "Patchwork Bag" 80992AD from Lion Brando Trick or Treat Candy is "Pinwheel Candy" 80747AD from Lion Brando Heart Design is "Cherry Heart Boho Hearts"o Spiral Flower is "Medium Spiral Flower" from bhookedcrochet site.Over half of the patterns listed above contain errors of varying degrees. (These are just the errors I spotted without going line-by-line). If you plan to make one of these projects, I strongly suggest locating the original pattern and reading through it.Ms. Cross deserves credit for identifying the source of the pictures used in her ebook. She also did a nice job on the Table of Contents links. One star for that.

I chose to give this book a 5 star rating because it's a great book. It has beautiful crochet patterns in it. Some are quick and easy and some are more challenging. It is well worth the price.

I'd recommend this to any person wanting a simplistic guide to stone mosaics. The pattern ideas are helpful as well.

I rented this book from the library, and just had to find it to buy!! One of the best books for this type of project. Great projects and easy step by step instructions.Took longer to arrive than if Amazon ships it, ....couple of weeks. But it arrived in great condition!
