Considered a revolutionary study of psychopathy upon its initial publication in 1941, Hervey Cleckley's The Mask of Sanity: An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues about the So-Called Psychopathic Personality offers useful insight into the affliction almost eighty years later. Faced with a poor understanding of psychopathy throughout society as well as the legal and psychiatric community, Dr. Cleckley hoped to identify the common symptoms of psychopaths and improve their treatment options. Working in a psychiatric hospital, he routinely saw individuals who were arrested for committing some petty crime, feigned insanity or bluffed at suicide to escape legal consequences for psychiatric institutions, then convincingly demonstrated apparently sound minds and above-average intelligence in order to effect their discharge from the hospital, only to commit further crimes and repeat the entire process all over again. Cleckley aspired to break this cycle by categorizing the characteristic traits of the psychopathic personality so that such individuals could be recognized by judges and psychiatrists alike, while simultaneously advocating for a reform of the medicolegal system that would enforce treatment at the discretion of a psychopath's physician. Given that questions of legal insanity are prevalent in modern criminal trials, these concerns remain relevant today. The most useful part of Cleckley's book is the 200 pages devoted to case studies of psychopathic patients observed under his care. These portraits form a cohesive profile of the psychopath as an otherwise intelligent individual with a startling inability to pursue long-term goals or act with consequences in mind. They lie on a whim, steal paltry sums of money, drink to excess, pursue frequent sexual encounters without affection and generally have no comprehension that their actions are harmful or troubling to those around them. Cleckley refreshingly refrains from sensationalism in these pages. Despite popular culture's depiction of the conscience-less serial killer, the psychopaths Cleckley encounters may threaten violence, but rarely (if ever) carry out regular acts of serious brutality. The cases described in these pages may have no moral compass, but they also lack the foresight required to pursue any far-reaching act of grave consequence. At times however, Cleckley's work offers unfortunate reminders of the era in which it was written. Much of his psychological analysis is couched in Freudian interpretations, like the Oedipus complex. A chapter on "Sexual Deviation" is filled with outdated and offensive depictions of homosexuality. And of course, there has been significant progress in psychology in general and the study of psychopathy in particular since The Mask's publication. Yet as a whole, the book offers a thorough depiction of the psychopathic personality that is likely to stand the test of time. For readers like me looking for a basic introduction to the subject, Cleckley's book serves its purpose as a clarification of psychopathic behavior.

I first became interested in this topic about eleven years ago after seeing an MSNBC investigates special about serial killers. The particular case which captured my attention was the Southern California perpetrator dubbed in the early eighties as 'The Original Night Stalker', whose connection through DNA matching to the 'East Area Rapist', earned him the moniker: EARONS. As EARONS is still at large, and the case so very tantalizing, I began to read any books, articles or papers which might shed light on the mindset of this and other characters of this type. Hervey Cleckley's book goes a long way to illuminating the nature of 'psychopathy' or 'anti social personality disorder(APD)': The term psychopath is used for ease of communicating the many shades and degrees of this complex personality disorder. He presents extreme case examples of people who are disabled by this syndrome as well as cases where the individuals are functioning, even successful members of society. He also illustrates other personality disorders, i.e. schizophrenia, psychoneuroses and their symptoms and other clinical features in juxtaposition as to 'why' these disorders and the people who suffer from them are not necessarily psychopaths, but that many disorders share overlapping features with psychopathy. It is very readable. Dr. Cleckley's elegant narrative has a 'southern' rhythm and tone mingled with erudition and the warmth of his humanity as he discusses each case: the facets thereof and the patients affected. His message is never obscured by overly esoteric jargon, nor does he lose the reader in overly technical detail. His aim is sincere in understanding this complex issue as well as to communicate to professionals and other interested readers. Also, since this goes back to the forties and early fifties, some of the language regarding sexuality, morality and gender roles is indicative of the cultural attitudes of those times; a kind of sounding board as to how we as an American culture have evolved in our attitudes and awareness of sexuality, mental illness, gender roles etc. To leave off: there is also great humor on the part of Dr. Cleckley as, for example, he attempts in chapter twelve to illustrate the libidonistic mindset of a group of teenage boys relevant to the chapter's presented case history.

The Mask of Sanity: An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues About the So-Called Psychopathic Personality, by Hervey Cleckley is a fabulous book. The information is geniune and one can expect detailed descriptions of patients and cases. The book DOES clarify quite a lot about psychopathy. What it is, who has it, and how can we begin to treat it? The gem in this book are the case studies Cleckley publishes, he recalls specifics and is very descriptive. He also remains unbiased while adding his own sort of "twist". At some points it feels like you are really experiencing the patients' antics through the authors eyes. I highly reccomend this book to anyone even interested in psychology.

Why there is no mention about the fact that this is reprint version of 1955 edition? Somebody wrote about it five years ago, 2011.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2018: Were you looking for more reasons to worry about the future, or the present? LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media will fuel your nightmares. P.W. Singer and Emerson T. Brooking’s treatise travels well beyond the disinformation and fake news we’re all now familiar with (right?), addressing the ways the internet and our social networks will be deployed in actual war: recruiting terrorists, inflicting sabotage remotely on a vast scale, and even Matrix-grade reality manipulation. Backed by over 100 pages of notes, LikeWar is sober, deeply researched, and still compulsively readable. Comparisons to On War and The Art of War are apt, while likely optimistic—given the accelerating pace of technology, any reasonable futurist can expect to see their predictions become obsolete in three to five years, or maybe two. But even if the specifics change, the principle holds: Disruption is coming, and we are not ready. It’s frightening, but as individuals, we are far from helpless. As Singer and Brooking conclude, “Social media is extraordinarily powerful…. Yet within this network, and in each of the battles on it, we all have the power of choice.” —Jon Foro, Amazon Book Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month An Amazon Best Book of the Year (2018)Featured on NPR, CBSn, MSNBC, PBS, and ABC News Radio, as well as in The New York Times, Washington Post, Time, Popular Science, Rolling Stone, Forbes, Atlantic, Wired, Slate, Politico, Gizmodo, Foreign Affairs, Defense One, Vox, The Daily Beast, Adweek, and more “A compelling read . . . [LikeWar] is not a warning about tomorrow’s war—it’s a map for those who don’t understand how the battlefield has already changed.”—Washington Post“Seriously. If you use social media in any capacity, you should read this.”—The Verge “Extremely timely and fascinating.”—The New York Times, New & Noteworthy “Terrific and alarming . . . Wow.”—SE Cupp, CNN“Reading LikeWar will help you to avoid being part of this Internet of Idiots . . . While students of history, strategic studies, political science, and international relations will all find LikeWar on their required reading list, anyone else who wishes to understand the world we live in must add LikeWar to the top of the pile on their nightstand.”—Forbes “Whether it's his fiction and nonfiction, his work as a TRADOC 'mad scientist,' the interviews he's done with defense media, the pages of Popular Science, or some other venue, P.W. Singer is the Army's must-read thinker.”—Army Magazine“Backed by over 100 pages of notes, LikeWar is sober, deeply researched, and still compulsively readable. Comparisons to On War and The Art of War are apt.”—Amazon, Best Book of the Month (Oct)“'Russia is not the full story," Singer tells Codebook. 'Russia is just a chapter in a larger book.' Singer, a researcher at the New America think tank, means that both figuratively and literally. His and Brooking's book, 'LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media,' comes out today. It may be the first study to link Mexican cartels, ISIS and reality TV villain Spencer Pratt.”—Axios “A fantastic read.”—The LoopCast“The picture Singer and Booking paint of how social media is being weaponized is compelling, and one that ought to give pause to any practitioner in the field of national security. I am reluctant to be so effusive in my praise, but this is truly a must-read book.”—Lawfare"...a blueprint on how to think, operate and survive in this operational environment."—Army Magazine “It’s clear that the information in LikeWar is vital to our national security; however, that’s not the real reason why I enjoyed the book so much. I liked the book just because it was highly readable and entertaining.... It’s a fun read, sure, but best of all is that every time I put down LikeWar, I felt that I had learned something new and important....This book and the information it contains is that vital. I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in national security, international relations, journalism, or history.”—NewsRep “...Essential reading if today’s Leaders (both in and out of uniform) are to understand, defend against, and ultimately wield the non-kinetic, yet violently manipulative effects of Social Media.”—US Army Training and Doctrine Command "....being ignorant of, and worse yet denying, these real threats to our cohesion as a country and to the global community of citizens, is no longer a choice and every individual, every organization, every country has to decide what role they will play in this battlefield and bears responsibility for the ultimate outcome. Reading LikeWar may be, for many, the right first step."—CipherBrief “This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of every corporate strategist and government leader.”—OODA-Loop“LikeWar is an eye-opening literary experience. Most of us access social media in some form on a near-daily basis, but do we really understand the phenomenon?”—Modern War Institute at West Point“Although the book is titled Like War, it isn’t so much about warfare as about how social media is affecting society broadly: how we consume information, why social media is so addictive, how it has been capitalized on by social movements, celebrities, politicians, terrorists, and states. It’s worth reading for the history of the Internet alone, which bounces along as vignettes about individuals that personalize the story (they clearly apply the elements of effective social media they identify: narrative, emotion, authenticity, community, and inundation)...A valuable primer on where social media came from and how its currently being used. It also has some useful suggestions for taming its effects.”—War on the Rocks “...Fantastic. LikeWar includes interviews with everyone from Michael Flynn to Spencer Pratt. It doesn't get better than that for a national security/reality tv-watching nerd like me.”—Just Security“This timely work provides a fascinating and often frightening portrait of the many ways social media is being weaponized and used to manipulate . . . This book is extremely well documented. Librarians will be especially heartened by the authors’ assertion that 'information literacy is no longer merely an education issue but a national security imperative.' VERDICT An important first purchase for all collections.”—Library Journal, STARRED review “Important resource...more than 100 pages of source notes attest to the thoroughness of their research, and Singer and Brooking have gone to very dark cyber places to bring these facts to light, analyzing ideas and organizations that may give readers nightmares and that can catalyze actual violence. LikeWar should be required reading for everyone living in a democracy and all who aspire to.”—Booklist, STARRED review “Few grasp the real threat Americans face on their favorite social networks in the course of their daily experiences. Through amusing vignettes and plenty of pop-culture references, the authors take us on a wild ride featuring everything from reality TV stars to Russian missiles. My take?  Like and share.”—Crispin Burke, Task & Purpose“LikeWar is a magical combination of history, technology, and early warning wrapped in a compelling narrative of how today’s information space can threaten the truth, our polity, and our security.  It’s a page turner, too, chock full of deep insights and fascinating detail.  Sun Tzu tells us to know ourselves, our enemy and our battle space and LikeWar delivers on all three.”—General Michael Hayden, former Director of the CIA and NSA, author of The Assault on Intelligence “Online technology has outrun our social intuitions about its power. In vivid prose, Singer and Brooking offer insight into the ways that social media can be used to manipulate beliefs and attitudes for self-serving purposes.”—Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the internet, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom   “Much as Clausewitz did for conventional war, LikeWar lays out the new 21st century principles of war. Mixing fascinating stories and the front edge of research, it explains the twilight battlegrounds of politics and war on social media—a frightening future where truth is the first casualty, and our fundamental values are deeply at danger.  I loved it.”—Admiral James Stavridis, US Navy (Ret.), former Supreme Allied Commander, NATO “My films have specialized in realistic horror. LikeWar is scary as hell, as it shows how people can be manipulated online to make our worst fears come true.” —Jason Blum, producer of The Purge and Get Out “Through a series of vivid vignettes, LikeWar shows how the internet has become a new battlefield in the 21st century, in ways that blur the line between war and peace and make each of us a potential target of postmodern conflict.”—Francis Fukuyama, author of The End of History, Director of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford University “The internet has fundamentally reshaped the way humans interact; by extension, it has reshaped the way humans wage war. This book is timely, but the takeaways are timeless.”—Ian Bremmer, Founder of the Eurasia Group, and New York Times best-selling author of Us. vs. Them   “In LikeWar, Peter Singer and Emerson Brooking incisively document how the use of social media and information operations are fundamentally changing the dynamics of global conflict and competition, while threatening the foundations of democracy. While the 2016 elections showed the power of social media and its manipulation by our adversaries,  Singer and Brooking provide a wakeup call to the wider challenges facing us, requiring that all Americans adapt and respond.” —Senator Mark Warner (VA), Ranking Member-Senate Select Committee on Intelligence “LikeWar is the best, most comprehensive book to appear on a phenomenon that has turned into the greatest threat to electoral democracy since the 18th Century.” —Toomas Hendrik Ilves, former President of Estonia, co-chair, World Economic Forum Global Futures Council “Singer and Brooking have produced a compulsively readable and insightful account of what social media is doing to our democracy and to our relations with each other. If it were fiction, their description of the battleground the Internet has become would be scary. As reality, it is terrifying.”—Professor Sir David Omand, former UK Security and Intelligence Coordinator and Director of Government Communications Headquarters

LikeWar is the manual for warfare in the 21st century, a worthy successor to Singer's Ghost Fleet, and excellent debut work for Brooking. It belongs on the shelf of anyone who wants to seriously understand how war will be fought and social policy developed in the era of Facebook and Twitter. There is a particularly urgent need for this book at a time when most tacticians have their eyes firmly fixed on enhancing cybersecurity through the protection of systems and hardware. While this is undeniably important, LikeWar reminds us that the information that is transmitted over that infrastructure is no less, and possibly quite a bit more important than the infrastructure itself. This message has never been more urgent than today when democratic nations struggle with balancing the need for an open civil society against the risks of foreign subversion and influence. This is the next great battle. It will be fought in the trenches of Facebook and the swamps of Twitter - wise commanders will bring LikeWar with them as field guide.LikeWar stands out for its incredible scope and accessibility. Its coverage is comprehensive - everything from the 2016 election to the IDF's influence tactics are explored, analyzed, and fit into a comprehensive thesis about the changing face of war. Read LikeWar and you will have a confident grasp of the major developments in this new theater of combat. Yet the book remains eminently readable - this combat guide does not require a reader to slog through the bone-dry prose of a TRADOC manual or an academic paper. It is quick and engaging yet thorough at the same time.In short, Singer and Brooking have written a manual for combat in the new millennium that is both engaging and substantial enough to leave their reader a master of the new face of battle.

Is Mark Zuckerberg responsible for exacerbating the killing fields on the South Side of Chicago? What is China's Golden Shield Project and what might it mean for you? Did Michael Flynn have any good ideas before his fall from grace serving in the Trump administration? Read this book and you'll get the answers to these questions and many more. This book takes a notion with which most readers are likely already familiar - the internet has graduated from its nascent status as a series of tubes connecting nerds and defense contractors to that of an ineffably complex globe-gobbling organism engaged every hour of every day in the instantaneous distribution of information spanning all spectra of human activity - and combines it with one not so well established in the popular imagination - we (or, at least, everyone who uses the internet) are all potential foot soldiers, willing or not, in the online and offline wars still raging as well as those yet to come.Written in succinct, snappy prose, the book tells the story of the internet from its peculiar vantage point at the intersection of social media and military conflict with its arguments firmly based in factual and expert analysis. Those seeking to validate a particular political slant or ideology should look elsewhere.

It’s interesting to learn how social media is used to manipulate the masses, but the author has obvious biases against conservatives. Be prepared for the typical bashing of Trump supporters, climate skeptics, etc. I’m not even the target of the attacks, but it’s so blatant, I even found myself rolling my eyes and groaning at the childishness of it.

"There is a war... for your Mind!"That's the slogan of InfoWars, the incendiary conspiracy news network and nutritional supplement marketing firm. And while Alex Jones is wrong about almost everything, he's right about that. In LikeWar Singer and Brooking ably synthesize a sophisticated picture of information warfare in 2018, drawing from sources as diverse as Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, and ISIS, to argue that the internet has lead to a blurring of lines between consumer, citizen, journalist, activist, and warrior which threatens the foundations of liberal democracy. The tech companies which built these platforms and profited from them must grapple with the politics of their technologies, before we all reap the whirlwind.Computer networks and smart phones connect billions of people, allowing ideas to flow faster than ever before in history. Sometimes, the results can be impressive. The Chiapas Zapatista movement in 1994 was a dial-up and fax version of a network insurgency that managed to bring enough international opprobrium on Mexico that the government blinked, and reached some kind of political accord (Chiapas is complicated). More recently, Eliot Higgins and a team of open source analysts at Bellingcat managed to track down the exact BUK missile system and Russian soldiers responsible for shooting down MH 17 in 2014.But there are a lot of dark sides. When people connect, the emotion that spreads most rapidly is anger. Lies spread five times faster than truth. Musicians can use social networks to directly connect with their fans, and ISIS uses it to connect with alienated Muslim youths worldwide. Social networks sort diverse citizens into filter bubbles of people who think alike. Eliot Higgin's careful open source intelligence has a paranoid fun-house mirror version in the QAnon conspiracy, where Qultist decoders find hidden messages from an alleged 'senior white house source'.And then there is the matter of information war, an area that even now, after years of offensive cyber operations, liberal democracies still don't understand. Hostile propaganda slips into Western news networks and major platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are infested with bots. LikeWar can even take a personal toll. Over the course of writing this book, General Michael Flynn went from forward looking full-spectrum commander to head Trumpist conspiracy cheerleader to indicted and plead out felon. Flynn's fall is complex, but it can't be separated from the internet. If the trolls got him, what chance does your idiot cousin stand? The counters, 'citizen truth teams' and senior emissaries to groups vulnerable to recruitment, seem like thin reeds against the coming maelstrom of noise.LikeWar starts with Clausewitz's dictum that war is a continuation of politics by other means, and there are clear links between cyberspace and physical space. Intensity of hashtags impacted the subsequent intensity of Israeli airstrikes during attacks on the Gaza strip. ISIS used propaganda to create an aura of invincibility that outflanked the defenders of Mosul, while Russia denied that its 'little green men' were even in Ukraine. But the difference is that cyberspace is constructed space rather than natural space. The networks are built, maintained, and owned by real corporations and real people. The internet grew from an anarchic specialized scientific network to a major engine of commerce and communicate with little deliberate government oversight. Section 230 absolved American companies of responsibility for policing content, with major carve outs for copyrighted IP and pornography. Yet as concerns over cyberbullying and counter-terrorism rose, major networks adopted digital constitutions that were permissive towards speech and censorious towards erotica. Policing content is and was possible, but always took a back seat to growth and engagement, the guide stars of Silicon Valley. The future is if anything, darker. Advances in machine learning and AI allow ever more realistic bots, computer generated DeepFakes where a politician can be programmed to say anything, and personalized targeting of people with exactly the propaganda they'll believe. There are defensive counters, but if I might draw military analogies, what we saw in 2016 was armored warfare circa 1918: clearly the future, but not yet a mature system. Given the pace of technology, we only have a few years before digital blitzkrieg.I'm extremely online, and I've been following this space for years. I've presented at multiple conferences on this topic, including Governance of Emerging Technologies and Association of Internet Researchers. LikeWar is the book I wish I'd written. Cognizant, forward looking, and deeply researched, it is vital reading for anyone interested in technology or politics. My only reservation is that I wish the sources were better linked in the text, instead of being buried in static endnotes. Maybe the next edition will push an update.

Although an informative read for those not familiar with disinformation/manipulation of information on the web, it contains over 100 pages of notes - which is disappointing...

I just got through 10% of the book and so far it is an elementary rendering of the history of electronic communication. I will keep trying and move through the rest of the book but if you have even been awake for the last 20 - 30 years, this will bore bore you to tears. This could have been condensed into a magazine article.

Like other National Geographic maps, this is a high quality material and interesting to look at. Unfortunately, this map did not make it out of my bag the entire trip. While Slovenia is a small country, it is too big to fit on one map. The map lacks enough details to be useful for both trails and roads. Save yourself the money and buy a road map in country and a trail map specific to where you want to hike.

Used this throughout our 2 weeks in Slovenia. Beautiful country, friendly people, and oh, this is a fantastic map.Used the Costa Rica version when we visited there and it was very helpful.

This is a good map for getting a general overview of Slovenia, but it doesn't have the road details I needed for driving around the country. I should have waited until I got there, and bought a road map at a gas station.

Maps often tear at theit folds when they get lots of use. I had high hopes for this one, and I wasn't disappointed.

Great!

Gorgeous rip proof map! thank you!

Nice overview map, made of durable paper. A bit heavy though because of the type of paper used. Pretty useful.

It shows every town and city. Clear and easy to read.Necessary if you are planning on traveling there.Excellent!

I read the Iliad in college and loved it, but when I went back to re-read it years later, I found it unreadable; among other things, all the recitations of death (kind of the inverse of all the "begats" in the bible) got in the way of what should be a very good story. I may try it again someday, perhaps in a different translation, but now that I've read this wonderful book I'm not sure I want to - or need to. This is a brilliant work; Ms. Miller's prose is crisp and simple yet evocative and poetic, and I loved every word. Her characters are alive and believable and the story line is smooth and real as well. This is one of those books that I wish had gone on a bit longer; perhaps Ms. Miller should tell and re-tell this classic tale from the perspectives of all the great characters.

Starting this book I was at a strong 3.5 stars, then it bumped up to 4, and then the end had me in such a mess that it suddenly became 5. A miracle this is.The story and plot revolves around the Trojan war and the moments before and after where Patroclus meets Achilles and laters waits for him. The flow is actually quite gentle, even during the war fighting. I had expected more action and heart racing moments, and that is maybe why I did not rush into a higher rating. However, even though I had a feeling of who and the knowledge of death, I was still struck hard. It did not come on suddenly, no. It crept slowly, clung to my heart and then watered in my eyes. It was the reaction to death that got me.The end is beautiful and sweet. It brings together the readers and the characters who are in pain and comforts us and makes us allies. The writing is also wonderful. It's poetic and lovely at times. Of course if you do not like things being compared to unrelated things, such as the plumpness of lips to that of a bee, then you will disagree with me here. Regardless, this is the writing style I most adore in moderation and thus have loved this book.

For better or for worse, the Homeric epics are a bedrock part of the Western literary canon. Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles looks at The Iliad from a fresh perspective: that of Patroclus, Achilles' closest companion. Since this is a retelling of a classic story (a genre to which I am predisposed), we already know how it's going to play out: Agamemnon will steal a slave girl claimed by Achilles, leading to the hero refusing to fight for the Greeks, leading to Patroclus donning his armor and being slain by Hector of Troy, leading to Achilles killing Hector and dragging him around the walls of his city, only to be killed himself by an arrow from Hector's brother Paris. What's different is what comes before and between. As most of us know, it was not uncommon in Ancient Greek life for older men to have sexual relationships with younger men. Homosexual relationships between men of the same age, however, were rarer. When I was taught The Iliad, even in college, the bond between Patroclus and Achilles was usually described as just a deep friendship (lip service was paid to the idea they could have been lovers but it was never taught as being the more persuasive interpretation). Miller's novel, however, roots itself in the alternate interpretation: she presents us with Achilles, the most gifted warrior in Greece, as a man in a loving and stable lifelong relationship with Patroclus. It would actually be more accurate to say she presents us with Patroclus as the romantic partner of Achilles: the story belongs to Patroclus, it is told through his eyes. Patroclus as created by Miller is a gentle soul, a disappointment to his aggressive father, who is banished when he kills another child purely by accident. He is sent to Peleus, father of Achilles, to be fostered, and is chosen by Achilles of all the young men at court to be his companion. Their relationship only gradually becomes romantic, much to the disgust of Achilles' river goddess mother, Thetis. She conspires more than once to break the couple apart, but their love is too strong and they remain together until the end. Miller explains Achilles' rage over the theft of his slave girl as being not about being deprived of a lover, but as being disrespected as the greatest soldier in the army by having his rightfully-claimed prize taken away.I found it a much more enjoyable take on the story than the original. Miller really gets the time to develop Patroclus and Achilles as characters in depicting them from boyhood all the way through adulthood. She paints a very devoted relationship between them: though both briefly experiment with sex with women, they never stray from each other and Achilles refuses to leave Patroclus despite strong maternal pressure to do so. Since Miller's Patroclus isn't a skilled or enthusiastic warrior and instead serves the Greek contingent at Troy as a healer, most of the battlefield scenes that I find so boring to read are left out entirely. This is a solid read for fans of historical fiction and/or classical retellings.

I have never read the Iliad, and I thought it might be fun to delve into a modern treatment of the story. This book had so many great reviews that it seemed worth buying. However, I stopped reading the novel when I was about 30% of the way through. By this time it became clear that the author was going to make the romance between Patroclus and Achilles the centerpiece of the book. For instance as teens, Achilles and Patroclus spend two or three years in the wilderness with a centaur who is supposed to be instructing Achilles in the art of war... except he doesn't. Patroclus is not supposed to be in the wilderness with them, but he tags along anyway. This means that Patroclus himself has the opportunity to learn the art of war from this great centaur who taught Heracles how to fight, but Patroclus doesn't either. It appears that the only reason these two were with centaur in the wilderness for a couple years was to allow the author to crate a bucolic love nest for the boys. And for unexplained reasons, Achilles' mother, Thetis, seems to have always hated Patroclus. Again from a Romance-novel point-of-view, her intense animosity seems to exist only to create a "forbidden love" situation between Patroclus and Achilles. It all seemed so contrived.

I ordered multiple copies of this book to give as gifts and one to keep for myself. I have been following Robyn's blog, Add a Pinch, for years and have loved the recipes she has on there so I thought this would be a good book. Wow! It is even better than I imagined. The recipes look so amazing and look like they would be so easy to make. I love the way she has the recipes flagged like 30 minutes or less to make, ones to make in the slow cooker, ones you can freeze, and the ones that take just a few ingredients. It is such a beautiful book and I plan to give some of these books to young brides. I know they should be able to follow these recipes. I'm a grandmother and even I learned some things from this book.I also ordered the Kindle edition so I could have it on my iPad. The pictures in this version just pop!

I have enjoyed everything I have made so far. There are some extremely basic recipes but many are so time consuming. I have gotten a fair amount of recipes from her blog, but don't feel mashed potatoes are anything to include in a cookbook. I would have liked to see less of those and more new ideas. The tomato, corn, and okra on the cover is excellent! We also enjoyed the cabbage rolls, buttermilk praline cheesecake (TOOK FOREVER with all the steps) and the pop overs. A good mix of food, but the non 30 min items are no joke, you're going to be there awhile. I recommend the book, but don't expect to be any faster than before.

Fantastic! This book makes cooking so much easier. My favorite recipes are the 30 minutes or less and the 10 ingredients or less. The week night chicken pot pie was a bit hit for everyone in the family last night!

I am so glad to have added Add a Pinch to my library of cookbooks. The color photographs are beautiful! I immensely enjoyed going through it, checking off many recipes that I plan to use for entertaining. I have made many of Robyn recipes from her blog, and they were delicious. Having this compilation of her some of her recipes is a true joy! The recipes are organized well and are easy to follow. So excited! Thanks Amazon for the speedy delivery of my Add a Pinch cookbook. Thanks Robyn for writing it, and I am looking forward to Volume 2!

It's a lovely cookbook, but not a good fit for me. It seems designed for family meal or larger party preparation. For instance, the slow cooker recipes are all designed for 6 quart cookers, appetizers often produce three dozen pieces, and most main and side dishes are aimed at six to eight. I do not like to downsize a recipe on first use, so this is just not going to be useful. It's going back. Southern Living's "Recipe Revival" or Elizabeth Heiskell's "What Can I Bring" seem a bit more versatile.

Wow. This is a must have Southern Cookbook that will delight your table for days to come. All of Robyn's recipes are tested and complete. My favorite meals are "Easy Pepper Steak", and "Balsamic Beef". The "Grilled Watermelon and Peach Salad with Basil and Feta " is truly memorable and is a meal in itself. This recipe book breaks it down to an easy to understand method and is one of my favorite cookbooks.

I purchased this for my Kindle after seeing the author on Food Network's The Kitchen. I'm so glad I did! This is a lovely collection of updated classics for the hone cook. Everything is from scratch but done in a way that isn't overly cumbersome. She arranged things in categories that are more logical than the ones traditionally used in cookbooks. I also appreciate how her love for her family and her heritage shines through in her writing and her recipes. You rock, Georgia Girl!

What a beautiful, well-organized and delicious cookbook! I've followed the Add a Pinch blog for years and love Robyn's recipes, so I was thrilled to receive my books! (I ordered several as gifts!)I made the Easy Skillet Lasagna and Strawberry Shortcakes with Cream Cheese Biscuits and they were a hit!!! I can't wait to dive into more of these recipes!Great Southern book that I feel sure will be a classic! Love it!!!

From the Author

"The best way to prosper yourself is to prosper others."                                    - Walter Jewell The first time I heard that advice, I was a very young man sitting at the dinner table with my family.  The topic that particular night was some variation of "What would you like to be when you grow up?"  After hearing my first few ideas, my father shared his simple ten-word suggestion for how to enjoy not only a successful career, but also personal fulfillment.Today, the lobby of our San Francisco headquarters features an Inspiration Wall that prominently displays my father's wise words and many others like it.  That wall is the touchstone of what my team and I do every day.  We teach fellow professionals how to enjoy greater success in their worlds by making others more successful. "Learning to sell efficiency effectively" is a phrase we use quite often in our work.  Having witnessed efficiency decision-making in more than three billion square feet of real estate over the last twenty years, we've found that very few people actually know how to sell efficiency. Most people simply promote it, as if it were a greater good like finding a cure for cancer or housing the homeless.  In some circles, the concept of "promoting" efficiency is so pervasive, you'd think "sell" was a "four-letter word"!  Many people are not very comfortable "selling" even in settings where the notion of selling is not taboo.  Why?  For one, the average salesperson receives less than three days of sales training in his or her entire career.  Moreover, most of that is really product knowledge training rather than teaching someone how to sell.  Second, many sales training programs feature techniques that are no longer effective given the increased sophistication and access to information that today's buyers bring to the table. Finally, most sales training programs are one-size-fits-all, as if one could sell efficiency the same way one might sell real estate, insurance, or photocopiers.  Without a doubt, the efficiency industry needs to stop promoting its wares and start selling them. In order for that to happen, many market actors will need training on how to sell efficiency effectively. The Efficiency Sales Professional Institute is not about "drop and run" training where folks attend a fast-paced seminar to get motivated and educated, only to revert to their old attitudes and habits shortly thereafter. All of our offerings are designed with an eye toward "drip-irrigation" content reinforcement to ensure that lessons learned are consistently applied to drive more sales and move efficiency forward. Jewell Insights™ is a perfect example of this philosophy.  Each and every day, we publish a short essay via our free ESP Ninja App and email blog.  Each essay either introduces or expands on a topic covered in our in-person and online offerings.  Our workshops offer plenty of innovative mindsets, strategies, and tactics for selling efficiency effectively. Jewell Insights™ provides daily reinforcement that helps those innovations "stick."  In the words of Mike Rowe (of Dirty Jobs fame), "innovation without imitation is a total waste of time."  Our combination of revelation and repetition transforms ordinary salespeople into lifelong efficiency sales professionals. On a related note, one of my favorite quotes is, "Successful people do what unsuccessful people are unwilling to do." To be successful you need more than a good idea.  Turning a vision into a reality requires real work. Many of our subscribers have already shared how applying something they had read in Jewell Insights allowed them to triumph in a sales situation, so it was an easy decision to compile some of our favorite essays into a book that would benefit an even larger audience. You may elect to read this book from start to finish.  Or you might turn to an essay at random when you need a dose of inspiration.  Either way, we're confident you'll find plenty of insights that will help you prosper yourself by prospering others.   Mark JewellRachel Christenson

Mark Jewell’s book and morning blog is a blueprint for success! As a implementing contractor for a utility company, our company encourages customers to complete energy efficiency projects. Each chapter of Mark’s book has a short specific lesson and I find that each message is relevant to our sales process and keeps me nourished with new ideas. Reading the book, then staying current reading the short blog is a way to think like electric and natural gas utility customers, including all stake holders, and understand what is important to them. Many of the books messages have strategies on how to approach customers that are contemplating ways to save energy and money. Striving to improve sales tactics keeps me sharp.

Refer to this book a couple times a week, it covers everything you'll need in this industry.

Zero fluff. Packed with Value. Transformed the way I think about Sales.Bullet point chapters make it easy to read in pieces – there is always a good stopping point. However most likely, you won't put it down.Bottom line: if you work sales, especially efficiency sales (Lighting, HVAC, Controls, etc) ........ this book is so worth your time. I wish that I had read this book sooner in my life.

Great Teaching. I have been in sales for many years, and have heard most of the greats. Mark Jewell KNOWS HIS STUFF. Great information,

Pretty simplistic book with basic information on selling energy projects. Had listened to Mark about a year ago and he is a good speaker with a lot of insight into how to sell energy projects. I thought the book was an easy read, but lacked detail in some areas. If you want a quick overview this is a good book, but is not in-depth by any means.

Mark Jewell is an excellent teacher and salesman who knows his topic and is able to effectively communicate to the lay person.

excellent..

Mark hits it out of the park with his ability to drill down to energy efficiency project researching, selling and closing. I feel much more positive about my plan without worry of failure as it is a necessary part of the upcoming success.

Ice Time (Lorimer Sports Stories)

Review

"Action-packed and entertaining, the novel is the latest hi-lo book for reluctant readers from Lorimer’s Sports Stories series. Filled with hockey jargon and insider knowledge of life on the ice, Ice Time will delight avid hockey fans and novices alike. Trifunov’s detailed descriptions of complex hockey plays and strategies provide a surprising depth to the game, while the sub-plot surrounding Vincent’s concussion raises awareness about an often ignored risk. Fast-paced, engaging, and just a little bit sentimental, Ice Time is a knuckle biting glide down slick ice that will feel heart-warmingly familiar to Canadian readers." (Karen Doerksen, National Reading Campaign)"Featuring covers clearly labeled with the sport in question, action-packed stories, and characters with diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds...sure to hook sporty middle school students." (School Library Journal)"This tale of a young Canadian immigrant who gets a longed for but unexpected chance to join a local team will score an easy goal with younger or less expert readers mad for hockey." (John Peters, Booklist)"The dialogue is realistic, and characters are authentic and develop during the story. Readers would enjoy the richness of the language and the local colour both from hockey and a prairie community. Ice Time would be an excellent choice for school, public and personal libraries...an excellent read-aloud choice. Highly Recommended." (Deborah Mervold, CM: Canadian Review of Materials)"I enjoyed reading this story about Paul and his friends. It has appeal for hockey players and people who don't play hockey." (Cheryl Mikulasik, Educator, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-05-20)"Ice Time is a worthy addition to the Lorimer Sports Series. it hits all the right notes about teamwork, having fun, and equal respect for girls' teams. Paul's financial situation is not unique, and the references to the Jump Start Program are a reminder of the community commitment to and benefit from organized sport." (Patricia Jermey, Resource Links)"Ice Time touches on valuable themes of friendship, teamwork and good attitude." (Alyssa Campbell, Librarian 2015-09-28)"This book is full of action. The characters are realistic and the situation they face is one that most young adult readers will be able to identify with and understand. I think this book is great for third grade and up readers. I think it will appeal to older readers who are reading below grade level." (Judy Gottschalk, Educator at White Salmon Schools, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-04-16)

This is a short story about Paul, a 12-yr.-old who loves to play hockey but who is raised by a single mom who does not have the money for him to play. When Paul’s best friend gets a concussion and can’t play and others on the team are sick, Paul gets his chance. It seems everyone on the team is happy to get Paul except for Chad. I think any boy or girl who likes hockey would enjoy this book. I thought it was a good story that promotes teamwork.
