This is my favorite of the books that Swoonreads has published so far. The writing is excellent, smart, fast, and clever (full of literary allusions that make it even more interesting on a deeper level for those of us who catch them, but won't slow down anyone who doesn't catch them). The characters are wonderful, too. Maddy is brilliant, courageous, and resourceful, but still a believable teenager, and Gabe is nowhere near perfect, but still perfect for her. And the passages when the author describes the figure skating are just beautiful in and of themselves.

I really enjoyed reading this book, the setting was interesting, I had never read a book who had the central characters be figure ice skaters. It was a whole new world for me and I loved it, I found myself youtubing all the moves that she talked about.The love story between the two friends was very realistic and while I would have liked less moments of calmness I really enjoyed it.If you're looking for a light, fun read set in a dreamlike scenario this book is for you.

Much much much better than i first expected. Really love it that i don't wanna put it down. When i read the last page, I screamed a long "NOOOO" in my head. I want moreeeeeeee. Please write Book 2 on Mad and Gabe's future story, even a short novella would be fine (pretty please)!!

Boy next door stories are a dime a dozen, but you can't go wrong with Katie Van Ark's debut. Rush into the world of ice skating and fall in love. Remember first loves. Recall your best friend. This is a book that will not disappoint.

My only concern is why did he die so young. Depending on his birthday, he was only 56 or 57 years old. I would like to know the cause of death? Was it for wounds he received in the Civil War? Every aspiring archer should read this book keeping in mind he was referring to archery materials that were in current use in his day.

Probably one of the finest little books on Traditional archery and bowhunting. Interesting tale of brothers coming out of the civil war not allowed to have firearms and improvise by using bows and arrows.

This book is truly a treasure in the world of literature that deals with archery. Thompson paints a vivid picture of the wilds of Florida as it was before the developers swooped in, built Disney World and The Villages, and left behind an environmental near disaster. His writing on archery re-kindled an interest in the sport that continues today. If you have a love for the outdoors and the sport of archery I believe you'll treasure this book as much as I do.

This man was one of the inspirational figures for Howard Hill. They were hunting with a bow when bow hunting wasn't cool. The book is old, so some of the language reflects the racial biases of the time, but like Huck Finn, if take in its historical context, it's tolerable. Keep in mind that it was published before the turn of the last century. If you're hyper-sensitive to such language (though I did not see the "big one" in there) it may not be for you. If you want an interesting look at the history of modern archery in our country, give it a read.

I am glad to find this book in kindle form. Others are pdfs that don't read well on the device. That's the technical part.More important is the fact that this is an important and classic source book in the history of American archery as well as a representative 19th century piece of nature writing. It stands along with the likes of Grinnell, Seton, and Muir as careful nature observation in the Romantic tradition.This work influenced the generation of American hunting archers that included Pope and Young.In many ways, this is a wonderful, and by and large unrecognized, piece of American nature writing from its seminal era.

The book was quite well written Some might find many of the words and phrases quite antiquated. As far as it being a manual of archery, it is more of a look at the attitudes and customs of the time.

Overall I found this to be an enjoyable collection of hunting stories that so well reflects what some might consider a deplorable period in our history. After all, the writer shots anything that moves (while crticizing the users of modern shotguns of the same), he beats his dog, uses woodpeckers for target practice, and holds to many of the stereotypes that were common of the time. But historical nuances aside there is something nostalgic and endearing about the chance to gaze at a simpler golden era of the sport, especially when told with such detailed passion. Mr. Thompsons love for archery and the wild places of late 19th century U.S. are palpable and moving. And all the while one can't help but pick up a tidbit or two about the art even raising a chuckle here and there at the craziness of some of the adventures told. This makes the book both a pleasurable read on its own and a must read for any toxophilite or lover of traditional archery. I recommend it without hesitation, especially now that it is in eBook form. Enjoy!

We may disagree with some of his targets today as they are either extinct or endangered, but it is typical of the era.This is good reading, not only for traditional archers and bowyers but anyone intrigued by the outdoors. Without much of a plan, you too get to ride along with Graham and Trish in their motor vehicle, without getting hot, thirsty, dirty, or tired; without investing every penny to your name to keep the thing going, without doing the digging when stuck; and without experiencing the unknown fears of traveling a country filled with a thousand unknowns. Unfortunately, you don't get to taste the amazing game or meet the amazing people along the way. Extremely well written and engaging, I am hoping Graham writes another book soon!

Printed, now (2015) 13 years ago, I hesitated if the book is up-to-date. 13 years in IT is like a millennium of human history. Fortunately, my fears soon had disappeared. The book fully covers HTTP 1.1, which is still the most up-to-date version of HTTP protocol. It simply means that the book 13 years since its publication is still perfectly valid.One thing that can strike a potential buyer is the book size. The HTTP protocol is a relatively simple protocol that was designed as a human readable protocol. In fact, its basic structure can be described in few pages. So why to have 500 pages? It's because the protocol has a lot of very important subtleties that the book covers to the details. Things like TCP connection management, caching, proxies, encodings, authentications, redirection, and even Web robots are covered there. And not just covered, but described on virtually hundreds of figures. For me these figures are the best thing of the book. I can't remember the other text that would have so well-designed figures. The figures are intuitive and easy to follow. Many times they helped me to understand the following text.As a SW developer I can say, the book is not just and an excellent study material and a great manual of the protocol, but using the text, it's easy to implement your own HTTP parser with things like optimal connection management that are essential for an effective browsing.Even now in the advent of HTTP 2.0, HTTP: The Definitive Guide: The Definitive Guide is still an essential guide to everyone who needs to understand this protocol.

Although this book is very in-depth, long, and quite possibly a good cure for insomnia, any decent web app pentester would be remiss without having this great reference book in their nerd library. This book explained virtually everything I ever wanted to know about HTTP headers. It is extensive and is a technical guide, however, the author does do a good job of keeping the information light, entertaining, interesting, and informative as best as anyone could on a topic such as this. If anything, reciting the knowledge I obtained from this book (and I'm only 50% through it at the time of this review), makes my co-workers think I'm some super-nerd on the HTTP protocol. In my opinion, this is a Must Have book in your arsenal of references.

This book was purchased as a refresher on the fundamentals of http. To that end, it is excellent, and recommended. Some areas, however, clearly show their age. Telnet and Pearl, for example, are almost obsolete in web development these days. Furthermore, http/2 is the current standard. On the other hand, this book teaches you what’s going on underneath the hood, which makes alot of those details irrelevant. Http will dominate the web indefinitely, regardless of any fancy additions to the protocol. No regrets.

Who would have thought you could write a 600+ page book about HTTP? The official specification itself is less than 200 pages - what else is there to say? As it turns out, quite a bit. This book traces the history of HTTP from 0.9 to the current version (1.1) and talks about the proposed HTTP-NG extensions as well. Part 1 covers the basics of HTTP: what it actually does and is for. Part 2 talks about the components that make HTTP work: servers, proxies, caches, etc. Part 3 covers HTTP security, including authentication headers and a brief overview of HTTPS. I would have liked to have seen some coverage of SSO here - SAML is close enough to HTTP as to be on topic in a book section about HTTP authentication - but they stuck with what's "baked in" to HTTP. Part 4 was my favorite part: this is where they talk about encodings, chunking, compression, internationalization, etc. This is the stuff that will get you when you're trying to deal with HTTP at a low level, and they cover it in a lot of detail, but manage to keep it interesting. Part 5, on the other hand, seemed like sort of an afterthought, which was a shame, because there was a lot of potentially great material in there. This is where they cover web publishing (as it relates to HTTP). Unfortunately, there's not much information here that you can't get from official specifications - the 30 pages they devote to WebDAV, for example, are just a dry repetition of the mechanics of WebDAV with no discussion of how it's used, or what problems you might run into trying to get it running. The final chapter on logging was OK, but again, it seemed like they could have gone into a lot more depth on actually using log files to troubleshoot problems than just telling you what was in the Apache/Netscape/Squid/etc. log files.Still, for such a long book, it's amazing that they kept their focus on HTTP so well - there's a lot of good advice and information in there. I'd recommend it to anybody who deals with the web at a technical level, from programmers to website administrators.

This book is a great book for those visiting Rome for the first time. Plus It's the perfect size to throw into your suitcase. It's a lovely very personal account of living in Rome. I think the recipes are easy to follow and give you a sense of how Romans eat, just like the title. It's a lovely addition to your Italian travel book collection. I loved the book. I found it charming and highly entertaining to read. I have already gifted it to friends who will be traveling to Rome for the first time in September.

Loved all the hints on how to enjoy the food mecca which is Rome, as well as offering some great recipes. Once I travel to Rome, I will better know if the recommendations for the great restaurants fulfills the promise.

Elizabeth Minchilli must have the richest and deepest connection to Roman food of anyone in the world. Her love and appreciation for her subject seem infinite. This book is a treasure house of information about prepared food of all kinds, as well as ingredients and where to get them and what can be done with them.. It's a terrific book to take with you to Rome, but just as useful back home. I was surprised to see that she has even included recipes and I'm going to try them. The artichoke recipes, which i was just reading, are inspiring. I have the book on my iPad and i think i'll get a printed copy as well. One reason for that is that Minchilli is a gifted photographer, and I want to see the photographs on the page.

I have been to Rome multiple times and it is nice to read about familiar things. The book has many anecdotes that I agree with and find entertaining. Many people go to Italy and some are disappointed by the food because all they know is Italian-American cuisine. This book serves as a good reference for people to know what to expect. With a little knowledge and understanding that things aren't the same as at home an individual could have a much more enjoyable trip. The author does a great job in story-telling.
