This work celebrates the exotically beautiful Loew's STATE theatre in Syracuse, NY, USA. The 78 pages of the ten inch high by seven inch wide publication constitute a booklet within hard covers which are entirely black with a gold stamped spine 3/8ths of an inch wide. It has a section of 16 color plates on glossy paper, but the remainder of the sewn-in pages is of standard matte book paper.Those who would review a book on a theatre are those who love theatres and look forward to each new effort, and the former STATE (now the LANDMARK theatre) is certainly one of architect Thomas Lamb's most wonderful works and deserving of praise, but, unfortunately, this "booklet" is not. While not every book on an individual theatre could be the Magnum Opus that is, for example, "FOX-The Last Word" about the fabulous San Francisco FOX, such books can be more than this amateurish paste-up. The author, Alfred Balk, lists himself as "Editor" because there really is no text, as one would expect of an authored work. He is a former magazine editor and a professor of journalism, yet we find no evidence of the scholarship that such credentials might suggest. Instead, the Editor, in conjunction with a Production Editor apparently from the Syracuse University Press, has assembled a small collection of photos and news clippings together with some captions to tell the theatre's story. Had each of these been exhaustive, they might possibly have delivered all the information a $25 hardbound might be expected to. Sadly, that is not the case. Mr. Balk as a member of their Board of Directors and Archivist has merely pasted up dozens of newspaper clippings interspersed with photos, the black and white ones being of poor quality on the matte book paper. Often the layout is a montage with one clipping photographed atop another! Not only is the reproduction quality poor making for difficult reading, but often the clipping is cut off wherever the editor wanted to conserve page space and the reader looks in vain for the rest of the item.Is this book about the notable architecture and decor of this famous movie palace? Not really. The 16 pages of color photos do help one gauge the exotic ambience of what remains after much restoration, and there are three full pages of black and white photos which suffer from the book paper. These together with five b/w photos and captions lifted from "Marquee" magazine of the Theatre Historical Society in Elmhurst, Ill. as well as two theatres books, are augmented only by four reproductions of the giant blueprints in much reduced size. Even at reduced size the blueprints are seen to be works of art in themselves but cry out to have been made as foldouts in larger size so that they could be fully appreciated. It is rather like trying to look at the "Mona Lisa" through a peephole. Since it is difficult to economically reproduce 3 by 4-foot blueprints in a book, then there should have been drawings in simplified form made from these to delineate all major facets of the theatre. This is commonplace for floor plans, but not one such is in the book - including no floor plan, which is vital to understanding a structure. This work does, however, make good use of its dust jacket where the front panel is a glossy, varnished color photo of the lobby and the back panel gives us the only view of the organ console in 1950, apparently in situ, but there is no caption about it. So, this is not an architectural work about this 2,900-seat performance hall.Is it a commercial history? Only in the most limited sense in that clippings are again intended to be the bulk of the text about the history of this house.What is the book about? Mostly the "Save-the-State" campaign and subsequent restoration efforts. Sixty-one of the 86 clippings and over half the pages reflect the names involved in these efforts and comments on their progress, the hard work of which volunteers is to be applauded! But the last paragraph of the Introduction gives its real raison d'etre when it states that they hope the book will stimulate support from many sources. Is your purchase price going to help the LANDMARK with financial support? They don't say.It might be mentioned that the full page photo of the stage switchboard by Westinghouse is a welcome exposition revealing the nine light groups for the auditorium, and 15 such for the stage, all in three colors and ten presets. It is a pity that they didn't key the house controls to numbers on a photo of the auditorium. Such illuminating detail is often overlooked in other books (pun intended).Is this "booklet" worth $25? Yes, if one has no other images of so mystical a theatre, but those who have other theatre books such as "Great American Movie Theatres" will see almost as much there, albeit not in color. If only this grant-funded book were the masterpiece that the theatre is!

This is the only real English-language tour book available about El Salvador, but it's a good one (better in fact than any of the Spanish ones that are sold inside the country). I used it several times when I was living there and found it very useful, especially when traveling to small towns in the countryside.

For years I looked for a book that would cover travel to El Salvador. I have been married to a Salvadorena for 16 years and have made five trips to the country since 1991. I love El Salvador, its beauty and its wonderful people. You can't travel there without this book! Buy it today!

I don't usually leave bad reviews on things, but I'll make an exception here. The entire book is one giant commercial for his consulting services. Literally every chapter tells you to go to his consulting website for something or another (sometimes multiple times per page!).The premise is "here are some tips for interviewing, but you can't do them yourself, you need a professional to do it better". And the term "brown shorts" which is overused nonstop really needs to be rethought, doesn't bring very pleasant imagery to mind.Very, very little practical info, tons of fluff and advertising. Couldn't even finish it.

While there are interesting ideas on how to approach interviewing, this book is very interested in getting you to buy Mr Murphy's services. I'm giving it 3 stars for helping me to be able to see the types of attitudes that we should hire for, but the book falls short because he only gives a few examples of how to actually ask questions and review answers related to these attitudes. Every chapter gives you a link to his website but doesn't deliver. Right now, I'm looking at the end of Chapter 1 where it says, "For free downloadable resources including the latest research, discussion guides, and forms please visit [...] This link now goes to his blog. I have yet to find the first FREE form or discussion guide.If this book was updated with an appendix of great questions to go with all of the attitudes Mr Murphy identifies as well as answer interpretation or if those answers were actually on his website, this could be 5-star material. Otherwise, deep-pocketed, large HR departments may find it a gateway into his services, but smaller firms will likely find it wanting.

Over the years I have read a number of books on hiring the right people and, for the most part, they've all been pretty similar or at least have taken similar approaches to hiring. I didn't really expect to find much difference with HIRING FOR ATTITUDE by Mark Murphy, but was pleasantly surprised to find the book is built around an entirely new (to me) concept of how to approach hiring the right people.With all of the books on hiring I've read in the past, I felt I had constructed a pretty solid barrage of interview questions and had plenty of resources to find the right people for the job. I very quickly learned just how ineffective many of my questions were and also learned a new way to ask questions that creates a much better way to gather useful information and learn far more about the qualities you are looking for, or the qualities that you are looking to avoid. In fact, it just so happened the morning after reading chapters 1, 2 & 3, I had interviews scheduled. What I had already read from the book had an immediate impact and I felt the interviews I held that day were the most productive and revealing interviews I had ever conducted.The entire approach taught by Murphy makes absolute and perfect sense. First he points out what I already knew: that most people who don't fit for a job are not because they lack skill but because they lack the right attitude. Any company with more than a handful of employees already has a blueprint for building their approach to hiring for the right attitude. You simply create a profile of your star performers and one of your poor performers. You identify the qualities that exemplify each and build your questions in a way that will identify those same or similar qualities in the candidates you interview. The entire process is laid out is very easy to understand and easy to implement terms.I want to make one thing very clear. Most hiring books are going to provide you with what, at first thought, seem like good questions to use in your interview process. They may even give a few pointers about body language, voice inflection, etc. The point I'm making is, basically you read the book and then you apply what you read. With this book, it's not so simple. To implement the advice given here is going to require a lot of work on your part. You're not going to simply read the book and apply what you've learned. To do this right means a number of preliminary steps such as identifying desirable and undesirable traits, developing profiles, crafting questions to fit your business culture and to identify traits, developing "word pictures" to help turn your current people into star performers, and a lot more.I truly believe, if you do the work needed with each of these steps, the eventual payoff will be tremendous. I've already seen an immediate impact and haven't carried out all of these steps. When it comes to finding top tier candidates for your company, I believe this book is a game changer. I give this book my highest recommendation.

I have been struggling over the last year trying to hire top performers. We tend to make the mistake that Mark highlights very well of hiring for skills when we should be hiring for attitude. I therefore jumped at the chance to read his book. On the plus side, he does a beautiful job of describing why hiring for attitude is important and how is company goes about developing custom questions to help ferret out attitudes through interviews. However, it is a very complicated process. A key step is to work out how a scoring guide so that you know exactly how to rate the responses to the questions. Although the book does provide a list of questions, there are really only two questions that are fully mapped out with the scoring key. Sure, it makes sense to go through the long process of developing questions that are perfect for you organization, but I had expected him to provide more examples. On top of this, he plugs his company throughout the book stating that more information is available on the website. Except the link doesn't work (it should be [...] ) and there is little additional information on the website.If he had included a dozen good examples of "brown short questions" along with the scoring key (or had them on the website), this book would be golden, but then you wouldn't need to hire Mark to help you develop your own questions. As it is, it is certainly worth $15. Based on what I pulled out of the book, I have revamped my interview technique and will slowly be building my own scoring keys. I therefore gave it four stars for great content, but not five because it could have been so much better.

This book is excellent as it identifies the importance of your culture when hiring new employees. It reviews the importance of identifying the characteristics of high and low performers within your organization, developing and asking proper questions during the interview process, establishing answers to those questions, and scoring your candidates. Further, the book goes into recruiting and performance management. There were some interesting analogies and the humor kept the reading entertaining. I highly recommend this book.

Well, I'm going to tell you right here in this review as I can't separate my life from my reading diet.A week ago I had been invited to go on a potential road trip to see my foster daughter. There were so many things that could happen to prevent said trip. So I was calling it the 'iffy trip'. But things didn't go wrong. Somehow everything went right and I got to go. I hadn't been in Oregon since I was in junior high. And I hadn't seen my foster daughter for at least a decade. And who knows, that iffy trip may have me moving up to Oregon very soon! How cool is that?My friend brought this book, The Wee Free Men, narrated by Stephen Briggs. What a great road trip read! My friend and I were enthralled! We were laughing so hard at the late Terry Pratchett's writing for most of the trip north and then most of the trip south. And, yes, the writing is the basis of this experience. But Mr. Briggs's acting skills were truly fantastic. He had all the accents and voices for everyone and kept the story going.Often while listening to this I pictured getting into Mr. Prachett's head while he was writing this story. He must have laughed to himself often with the puns that seem to rolls from his fingers into the pages. Then I wished I could watch Stephen Briggs do his part in front of the mic doing his performance. There had to be quite a few faces for each of the characters that seem to jump out of his mouth.Needless to say, I have this book on my Kindle and Audible wishlists. I want to read it over and over. It is easily as great as Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz. It would be a great family read. SO fun!

This was my first Terry Pratchett book ever, thus my introduction to Discworld. I’ve wanted to read the series, but with 41 books I wasn’t sure I even wanted to attempt it. Wee Free Men is aimed at young adults with the female protagonist just a child (around 9 years old), and is the first book in the Tiffany Aching series, so it was a great place to start.I’ve got to say, this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. The story is completely charming in itself, a young girl meets some little men with red hair, blue tattoos, wearing kilts, about 6 inches tall called Nac Mac Feegle or the Wee Free Men, and together they have to rescue her young brother. The characters are well developed and almost always entertaining and hilarious – for example her younger brother constantly asks for “sweeties”, the Wee Free Men speak in Scottish accents and say things like “Ah, crivens” and are generally good natured despite being thieves. The best part for me, however, were all the surprising references to other books and pop culture which I did not expect but always put a smile on my face. For example, Pratchett parodies Lord of the Rings with “See their swords? They glow blue in the presence of lawyers” and Braveheart with “They can tak’ oour lives but they canna tak’ our troousers!” There’s possibly even a Bushism from the early 2000s (this book was published in 2003, so would make sense).The book was a very easy, very entertaining read. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the Tiffany Aching miniseries as well as perhaps starting in on the rest of the larger Discworld universe.

Tiffany’s help comes to her when the local clan of the Wee Free Men shows up looking for the new “hag ol’ the hills” because of the invasion of the Queen. Tiffany and the Wee Free Men invade ‘Fairyland’ and manage to return with her brother, a feat that Granny Weatherwax finds impressive for someone so young and untrained."The Wee Free Men" features Tiffany as the only point-of-view character, save from a narrator, which keeps the book fairly orderly when reading as well as being in line for a book for younger readers. The story itself is somewhat familiar for long time Discworld fans with the antagonist being the Queen of the Elves invading, but Pratchett changes things up with the use of dreams and the conflict as seen from a nine-year old. The cameo appearance of Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg at the end, sets up further adventures of Tiffany and connects her subseries with the Witches subseries with the hopes of seeing favorite characters in future books.The second young adult and first Tiffany subseries book of the Discworld canon is a fantastic book; "The Wee Free Men" gives someone new for long time fans while introducing older characters for younger new readers. While it’s intended for a younger audience, older fans will appreciate Pratchett’s humorous fantasy writing with his twists and turns.
