This biography of Yatzak Rabin by Itamar Rabinovitch (professor, university president, and colleague of Rabin) is another excellent addition to Yale University Press’ “Jewish Lives” series. The author has crafted a well-written overview of the life of an important Israeli military and political leader. Beginning with Rabin’s birth in Jewish Palestine (He would become the first native-born prime minister of Israel.), Rabinovitch examines Rabin’s education, time in the Palmach during the War of Independence, transfer after the war to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), rise to the position of chief of staff prior to the Six-Day War of June 1967, successful tour as Israeli ambassador to the United States, entry into politics and failed prime ministership, rehabilitation, and second role as prime minister. His second prime ministership saw an agreement with Yasir Arafat and the Palestinians and a treaty with Jordan. Rabin’s peace efforts culminated in his assassination on 4 November 1995. Rabin was no dove; his willingness to make concessions for peace was based on the nation’s security needs. The author deals adeptly with the long-running feud between Rabin and Simon Peres for leadership of the Labor Party. Ironically, at the point which both men decided that they could accomplish more by working together—with Rabin as leader of the Labor Party and Peres as second in leadership—Rabin was murderedRabinovitch is at his best in the section on Rabin’s assassination and its aftermath. A number of people both within and outside of Israel believed that the heated rhetoric over the Oslo Accords, especially from the West Bank settlers and the religious right, would likely result in an attempt on Rabin’s life. A number of Israelis put the “Land of Israel” above the “State of Israel.” They labeled Rabin a traitor to Israel and the Jewish people, even sanctioning his murder based on an old Jewish law. Likud politician Benjamin Netanyahu (the current prime minister) poured gasoline on the fire, but after Rabin’s assassination, he distanced himself from any blame for helping create this volatile atmosphere. The assassin was a religious radical. The investigation of the assassination, however, ignored the assassin’s religious and political views, concentrating instead on the security lapses.Peres became prime minister and continued peace talks with the Palestinians and Syria. Instead of having an immediate election, he waited six months. Two weeks before the vote, Hamas attacks killed nearly 60 Israelis in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, convincing many Israelis that the Palestinians could not be trusted to police their own people. These acts of terror returned Likud to power, the country began a move to the right, and the peace process was gradually discarded. Peace today is much harder to achieve than in 1995 because West Bank settlements have expanded and new ones have been added. The author concludes that Rabin’s death was a watershed for Israel because in the end “the assassin and his camp were in fact rewarded for the crime.” (239)I would have liked to have seen more citations. Two points here. First, in the “Acknowledgments” the author mentions “the benefit of personal interviews and conversations with a large number [40] of individuals.” (252) These interviews are only referenced in one endnote. Thus, how did these interviews benefit Rabinovitch? Second, in the section on the Entebbe raid (128-32), only two sources are cited—Rabin Memoirs and Amos Shifris’ Rabin’s First Government, 1974-1977. Surely a biography of Peres or Yoni Netanyahu (the only IDF fatality at Entebbe) or Saul David’s Operation Thunderbolt could have added something to this section. Nevertheless, this concern does not detract from an otherwise first-rate biography of Rabin. If I could, I would give the book 4.5 stars, but since the choice is a 4 or 5, I went with 4.

Itamar Rabinovich’s brilliant account of Yitzhak Rabin’s life and career is both a masterly historical monograph and a gripping first-person account of Rabin’s second term as Israeli prime minister. Given that Rabinovich worked intimately with Rabin during those epochal final years, eventually in Rabin’s own former position as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, these latter sections of the book are not only a page-turning treat for the general reader but will, one assumes, comprise an important primary source for historians and political scientists as well. The book also contains the most trenchant summary I’ve read of the complex, ultimately lethal circumstances that underlay and permitted Rabin’s assassination, an analysis that is no less heartbreaking for being sober and clear-eyed. The book, though inevitably pierced through with a sense of loss and of what might have been, leaves one with at least some hope that Rabin’s indomitability, along with his biographer’s sensitivity and intellectual rigor, will prevail in the end.

I read this book with great pleasure and interest. It's a realistic biography of the life of Rabin by a knowledgeable writer who has worked together with Rabin. It teaches us not only about his life, his character and his achievements and failures, but also about the political climate in Israël and also the USA during his period. I do recommend this book very much.

In addition to providing detailed insights into Rabin's life and times, Rabinovich's book exhibits the kind of first-hand knowledge that can only come from direct involvement with the man and the events. At times I felt I was being brought into the room to watch events unfold, leaders interact, and important national and international decisions be taken.

Informative, honest and respectful of Yitzhak Rabin.

Yitzhak Rabin: Soldier, Leader, Statesman by Itamar Rabinovich is a biography of the famous Israeli politician. Mr. Rabinovich is a political operative who worked with Mr. Rabin. This biography of the Israeli persona, an account of Mr. Rabin’s career and life as a solider and statesman. Mr. Rabinovich worked with Mr. Rabin late in his career and even held the same post, that of Israel’s ambassador to the United States. The book’s most impressive part comes as a first-person account of Mr. Rabin’s second term as the Israeli Prime Minister. The author was witness to history and his narrative is fascinating, the insights are thoughtful , and the deductions are enlightening.I still remember the day that Mr. Rabin passed away from an assassin’s bullet. I was not in Israel, but on a comfortable couch in New Jersey, however I felt as if I was in another world. After all Israel, “the light to be cast unto the nations” as David Ben-Gurion (Israel’s first Prime Minister) said, is not a country where political leaders are assassinated. At the time no one understood how such a tragedy could happen. A Jewish Prime Minister, assassinated by a Jewish man, in a Jewish state, surrounded by bodyguards and an adoring crowd.Mr. Rabinovich wrote an outstanding summary which attempts to inform the reader of the complex circumstances which allowed a man to feel as if he was permitted to pull the trigger and murder a person in cold blood. Putting his emotions to the side, the author’s analysis is straightforward and thoughtful. The author talks about Mr. Rabin’s many achievements, as well as his failures, his personality traits (both positive and negative), and the person he was, not just the public figure. The book is engrossing and an important primary source for future generations to study.

I really, really, really like this book! I found it at the public library and thought it would be another lame, "make lists, set goals and priorities" book but boy was I wrong! Rather than letting it sit for a week, like I normally do, I read it straight thru in two evenings. I'm a recovering "world class procrastinator" so I was ready to be disappointed, as I have been with so many other books on this subject, but it wasn't to be! Bottom line: I like the fact that he has science to back up his suggestions and some clear, step-by-step ways to implement them. I bought the book so I could highlight the heck out of it (libraries tend to frown on that practice. Go figure?) and have started using the ideas that fit my pattern of "addiction" - and they are working! Maybe its just me, maybe its the book or a combination, but I'm getting results that other books haven't provided. Don't skip the evaluation quizzes in the first chapter and do the full online version as well - you may not like the results! If you really suffer from procrastination this might be a book for you. Don't procrastinate! Buy it now and read it!

I consume productivity books. Most give a nugget of wisdom at best. But this book is the holy grail of figuring out why you aren't getting "it" done. Best part is you get evidence-based solutions with well summized action plans at the end of each section. This is my favorite book I've read this year!

This was a highly insightful and encouraging read. I didn't think I would ever overcome my chronic procrastination. Piers does a wonderful job in describing why we procrastinate and provides useful techniques to stop our procrastination in its tracks, or help us procrastinate more effectively. Thanks to The John Batchelor Show for interviewing Piers on this great piece of work. Definitely a game changer for me.

Not a good how to book. Explained the history and the why of procrastination, but slim on specific tools and techniques.

Much great info, helped me alot. I now attack projects rather then put them on a to do list.

It is such a fascinating book, that after reading it all, I never thought I could read so fast in such a short period of time. Is perhaps one of the best books I've read after "Emotional Intelligence of Daniel Goleman", it's so nice to know that there are still writers among us of that caliper, and sincerity.

Like: Scientifically based. Makes sense. Offers sound advice. Well written.Dislike: I needed it years ago.Recommend it to everyone.

A great book for those who wish to explore procrastination. This is not exactly an easy read, but is worth the effort. I would place this in my top 5 books on procrastination.

I have loved to read about the Aztecs from junior high. Believe it or not from a textbook that covered the Spanish conquest in some detail.I was not familiar with the Triple Alliance until now . Nor did I know the Aztecs never referred to themselves as Aztec. The classes of people was informative & the way governing the empire was not essentially the emperor’s role .Also interesting was the diet of corn & beans which gave the Aztecs all the nutritional value needed . Meat was in short supply so they made do with what was available & what they could grow.So sad that this empire fell rather quickly after the Spanish arrived but not being immuned to new diseases the population slowly vanished. But, with archaeologists still studying & excavating this empire more information will be added to its knowledge base.Read this book to add to your knowledge of the Aztec empire & if you never read anything on the Aztecs this book a good place to start.Thank you Captivating History for another super book!!!

Really enjoyed reading this book from Captivating History on the Aztecs. It's my first time reading about their history, I knew very little of them previously, other than they were conquered by the Spanish. The book provides a good overview of how they came to be, of their rise and expansion and what lead to the fall of this powerful people group in a few short years. A big focus is the golden years of their history with an emphasis on explaining the story behind the story through a discussion of how their society was structured and the ensuing politics and pecking order within Aztec society. Daily life is discussed covering topics including agriculture to sports. The book concludes with helpful summary of the material covered within the book and a Bibliography for digger deeper into the history of this most interesting people group.

Another good book in this series. With the Aztecs there are enough ruins, images and writing that their history can be fairly well figured out. Their empire consisted of around 50 city-states and at one time reached about 3 million in population. The fairly well thrived until the Spanish soldiers arrived with their diseases and weapons and that was pretty much all she wrote for the Aztecs. Another aspect of this, of course, was that the Aztecs had their own enemies who allied with the Spanish to help defeat the Aztecs. The Aztecs, like the United States, actually consisted of an area with diverse climates and that, of course, had an effect on what people did to survive in those different areas. Two overriding characteristics were the concept of tribute and human sacrifice.Their society was stratified with a number of layers from the very top down to the slaves who, unlike those in the U.S., were able to leave slavery behind sometimes. The book also goes into the topics of the Aztec religion (many, many gods), the life of the commoners, how the leaders got elected, the stratification by wealth and even their sports. One thing I found very interesting was the Aztec concept of this being the fifth Earth, not the first.All-in-all another very well-done book for this series.

I learned more about the people and traditions that influenced the human sacrifice ,that is mostly what is highlighted in history books today. Learning more about their creation history and their version of heaven and hell, explains a lot of how and why they acted as they did. This book helped me understand their calendar system's better. I didn't really know that the Aztec's were mostly vegetarian. All in all it was a enjoyable and informative read.I received this book for free to review and loved it. Will be using this to supplement my home school mesoamerica history.

Bassem Youssef became a media sensation in the wake of the Arab Spring in Egypt. He started a YouTube program which expanded into a weekly TV show that became one of the most successful television shows of any kind in the Arab world. His brand of political satire, which was inspired by his hero, the American satirist Jon Stewart, ruffled feathers on every side of the social, religious, and political scene in Egypt. He writes about his rise from surgeon to TV star to exile in Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring. The events and factions of the Arab Spring are mostly mysterious to Americans, so Youssef's narrative and explanations are welcome. He acknowledges his own inadequacies, and refers the reader to boring scholarly books for a more historically accurate account. He writes, "Let me give you some advice: if you think you are ever going to truly understand what is happening in the Middle East . . . stop!" Still, as he tells his perspective, a clearer picture of this period in Egyptian history comes into view.Since Youssef came to fame as a political satirist, I expected this book to be funny. He gets in a couple of good one-liners, like "This is how you know you are in an Arab country: you are either stuck in a revolution or in traffic." But other than a couple of zingers, it wasn't funny. Not at all. I'm guessing his show was much funnier. My overall impression of Youssef is that he is arrogant and unlikable. He built his reputation on being a contrarian, calling out Egypt's changing constellation of leadership for their hypocrisy. He does that, but the problem is that everyone who disagrees with him is an a--hole. He claims to be Muslim, but I never heard a good statement of what that means to him. To him, every Muslim leader in Egypt is hypocritical and power driven. No matter who is in power, he opposes their every word. That seems like an unprincipled, untenable way to live.He lets his criticism spill over into American politics as well. Trying to emulate his hero Jon Stewart, he tries to trump Stewart's anti-Trumpism. But it comes off as artificial and overblown. His attempts to equate Trump with Egyptian regimes that run over peacefully demonstrating civilians with tanks don't fly. His comparisons of Fox News to the the Egyptian broadcasters who work hand-in-hand (or maybe hand-in-glove) with the government similarly fall flat. If he wants to see examples of government and the news media working together, perhaps he should have paid more attention to the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.Youssef, perhaps inadvertently, gives support to Trump's position on Islam. He writes about that crazy YouTube movie that someone made about Mohammed. (He buys Secretary of State Clinton's line that the attack on the Benghazi embassy was a reaction to the video.) Muslims throughout the Arab world rioted, issued death threats, etc. Youssef writes, "Isn't it a wonder that when people accuse Islam and its Prophet of being violent and extreme, the first reaction out of Muslims is violence and extremism?" On Trump's immigration policies, Youssef says, "When Muslims worry about Trump becoming president and how he will deal with Muslims, they are just worried they will be treated the same way they treat non-Muslims in their countries. Like sh--."I would like to have read some reflections on political Islam from someone who is both a faithful Muslim and who is in favor of religious freedom and diversity. I am in no position to judge Youssef, of course. I have never met him. But I feel like someone who so flagrantly displays his opposition to Muslim practices and theology is probably not a good representative of the faith. E.g.: A sheik "proffered that freedom devoid of religious control would inevitably lead to sexual freedom and orgies happening in the streets (which sounds like heaven on earth to me)."Instead we get a guy who wants to kiss up to liberal Americans by parroting anti-Trump, anti-Fox news one liners, who equates the political and religious cesspool that his country has turned into with the American political and religious atmosphere. Sure, there are parallels. He says that "radical Christians and radical Muslims are not that different," while failing to acknowledge the yawning chasm that exists between radical religionists in the U.S. and in the Arab world. Again, I don't see Christian clergy crushing protestors in the streets of New York.Youssef faced opposition and personal peril to himself and his family due to his outspoken political statements. He gained a large following in Egypt, where there was no tradition to vocal opposition to the government. For that, the recognition he has received for being an influential voice in his home country is warranted. But as he tries to continue his caustic brand of commentary across the Atlantic the result is more screeching than substantial. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Bassem Youssef is an extraordinary personality who deserves to be a major international star. He gets billed as the "Jon Stewart of Egypt" but Stewart himself acknowledges that Youssef had it a lot more difficult; Stewart was never at risk of arrest or of having his show shut down. And you can't help but admire someone who can do humor (and satire) in two different languages. The book is a highly informative, frequently humorous accounting of his five years from the beginning of his show "Al Bernameg" to his exile in the United States. If you've seen his many interviews or seen the documentary film "Tickling Giants," much of the material here will be familiar, but it provides greater detail and a requisite amount of snark. Buy it. Buy it for your friends.

It’s not often that I review a book before I have even finished it but I could not wait. And it’s not often I buy a book on Kindle and then feel the need to buy a physical copy too. That’s how much I am enjoying this funny, wise, elegantly written, informative excursion by one of my heroes. Courage comes in many forms and Youssef has it. The courage to point at the emperor and say he has no clothes, and then laugh because a naked man leading a parade is funny.Read this because it’s an important book. Read it to learn some truths about a very complicated region of this earth. And read it to learn something about life and politics wherever you live. Nothing any human being does or says is too sacred for satire. And finally, read it to have a good laugh, because goodness knows, we all need one.

This book will grab and keep your attention right from the beginning! This book reads as if you were watching Bassem on The Daily Show with each part having multiple segments. I have already bought multiple copies as gifts!

This is the most awesome book I've ever read and that is no exaggeration. This is real. A guy put his life on the line to show people how utterly ridiculous the leaders of his country are. i can't imagine the bravery of such a person who would take on the fear and hatred like he did. He's a Jedi Knight but instead of a light saber he wields words that are even stronger. And to top it off I highlighted more in this book than I ever have in any book. This is wisdom worth keeping.

The "Jon Stewart of Egypt" describes his role in the Arab Spring and his view of its tragic failure, as Egypt went from hope to hypocritical religious dictatorship to a secular military dictatorship that was even worse and even more absurd. At one point the military announced that they'd developed a machine that cured Hepatitis C, cancer, and impotence, and their supporters believed it completely, saying any evidence to the contrary was a fake news conspiracy to make Egypt look bad (sound familiar?) Bassem Youseff's narrative is filled with humor, but also anger and deep sorrow for what his country has become. A must-read.

I LOVED this book. I figured I would since I like Bassem. Despite not being Egyptian, I have been obsessed with the country for almost a decade, and had to snap myself out of seeing Cairo with rose-colored glasses regularly while I was there. Egypt has a problematic political history, and it's nice to see a native acknowledge it, and call out who needs to be called out.Much of the book is written how one would expect a comedian to write it, but then it takes a turn when he describes how he had to leave his home country. If the reader is focused while reading the book, they can appreciate how he prepares you for it.
