Mistress of the Sun is a novel about Louise de la Valliere, the first long term mistress of Louis XIV. Louise is of an extremely minor nobility and, when her father dies, Louise's mother does not have enough left for a dowry. Louise eventually becomes a maid in waiting for the king's brother's wife, Henriette. It is here that she gets a taste of court life and captures the eye of the king.Louise is an extremely likeable character. So many monarchs have mistresses that just seem to be using them for titles and wealth. It was refreshing to read about a mistress who appeared to legitimately love a king. Louise and Louis kept their affair secret for as long as possible, so her first two children were not even legitimized by him and during this time she didn't receive royal favors from him. While she did, eventually, use her influence to help her brother, she really didn't exhaust the treasury like Louis' contemporary king, Charles II of England, was doing for his mistresses. Also, her role in the country wasn't as pronounced. People didn't ask her to present their petitions to the king. In one instance, the minister of the treasury tries to offer her money to spy on the king. She tells him her loyalty isn't for sale and then reports the incident to the king. It does seem like she truly puts the king first, and isn't with him just to see what she can get. Granted, this is historical fiction so it isn't all true, but she made a very positive impression.Louise is also presented as having simple tastes. She likes to read, ride horses and be outside. She doesn't gamble very much and doesn't stay out to all hours. She is extremely religious and her affair with the king weighs on her. I just really got the feeling that she was a good person who fell in love with the wrong man.The details in this book are fantastic. Some of the traditions of that time are disgusting but also fascinating. One example: When the queen is pregnant, Louis kills a deer and gives her the heart, which she uses as a protective amulet during the birth of their child. Disgusting by today's standards but it is interesting to think about what was considered lucky and protective back then. I also really liked the descriptions of French royalty getting dressed. It was quite a process since every maid in waiting had a specific role that had to be performed just so.I thought this book was a really interesting look into the court of the Sun King. I wish there were more novels set in this time and place. There are a couple of problems that should have been caught by an editor but nothing too distracting. Louise is a great character and a lot of fun to learn about and cheer for.
Petite a adventurous child who wandered from home to see the traveling show of a warrior woman who stood on the back of a thunderous stallion as it ran full speed. She already had given her heart to horses but something had pulled her there that day in particular. A pure white wild stallion, angry and untamed. She had managed to convince her father to buy him for her even though he was untamed, wild at heart, and just like her. After a turn of events the horse could not be swayed even with a gentler and an exorcism. Her father had decided the burden was to great and decided to put him down. Petite being only six years old could not let that happen. She slipped into her fathers library and read about "Bone Magic" for horses. The bone magic worked but at what cost? Did she let in the devil when she did it? Or was it just fate that sorrow followed her from then on.Petite was a different type of character for me . She was completely lacking of ambition, and she did not really listen to her heart for instruction in her life. A mysterious person who did not even gossip with her maid and actually kept a lot of things from her. She reminded me of the type of person to be inclined to stay with the animals rather than people. A whisperer who gentled animals.
I was intensely drawn into the story of Louise, called Petite, from the first line of the novel to the very last. Very seldom does a novelist combine such deep, rich characters who are as real as your neighbors with such a vividly drawn world. I felt them as good friends, and through Louise's eyes, fell emotionally and erotically in love with Louis who later would be known to history as the Sun King.It seemed when reading MISTRESS OF THE SUN that the very walls of my room opened and became palace stairways rushed down, a wood where lovers meet, a stable with a wild white horse, a kindly, complex father with his wood rosary beads, the daily combination of courtly protocol and jewelry with heartbreak, the stinks and smells of chamberpots, and the crowds jammed into breathless bedchambers to witness the life and death struggle of royal childbirth. To Petite and the others, the sense of God watching their human failures every moment is as vivid as their own breath. But the main journey belongs to the devout, physically daring and sensitive Petite who falls truly in love with the married Louis; her tragedy (and his) is that he is also King, and the more he becomes King, the more she loses the man on whom she has centered her life.
