This book is the best I've read on structuring a compelling memoir as absorbing as fiction and I have read near all books and systems on structure. The exercises are not superficial as some, they are integral to the process of mining your life for the best way to capture and tell the story you need to tell. Buy it first and save yourself the time of shifting programs and theories that only delay the process. I recommend it highly!
One of the best books I've read on writing autobiographical stories. Applies to anything from an autobiographical short story, to book length. There are exercises throughout putting principles to use as you learn them, which also leaves one with a lot of pieces which can be combined to bring out the specific narrative one wants to relate.
This book does an excellent job of prodding one to dig deeper, asking pointed questions and directed short exercises to get you thinking. In writing my memoir, I had a hard time going beyond the surface events and revealing myself. This book asked me just the questions I needed to consider to remove my focus from events and to look at my inner emotions and conflicts. Reading the book and doing the exercises provided throughout results in a very helpful compilation of thoughts and structure that can give shape to a story.I found the book's style to be sometimes overly chatty, especially at the beginning. But despite the fluff, all of the meat is in there, providing very useful tools to writers seeking to make a compelling story from their life experiences.Take your time to go through this book slowly, doing the exercises in order. It took me several months. But at the end, I had a vision, an outline, and some very useful first draft material. I was finally on my way to putting together a manuscript. Follow Rainier's instructions and it will happen.
Excellent! I'm still reading this book going back and forth to various sections. Having read all of Anaïs Nin's diaries and then read Rainer's "Venus" book about her life with Anaïs, and a journal writer myself, just had to read this one.
I suppose I shouldn't rate this until I'm finished, but I'm afraid I'll forget. I'm reading it, now. So far, it is the best memoir book I've ever encountered. It gives all sorts of different ways to approach memoir, and the short exercises she suggest go well with her explanations (NB: the exercises are optional). Mostly, the author throws out different ideas or ways of thinking about what one wishes to write. This is wonderful for someone who knows they want to write a memoir, but who hasn't quite got a handle on what, where, when or why? I am only halfway through; I hope that by the end, I will be more cognizant of my direction. NB: This is also great for people who have started memoir, and come back to it, years later. The book can be reread many times with fresh insights.
Wonderful book that I bought for the 2nd time (used it as a text years ago in a memoir class at Rollins college in Winter Park, FL). This book is probably the single best guide to writing fictionalized non-fiction and memoir. Lots of anecdotes, exercises and examples, though there is nothing like being well-read in the genre to get a sense of what can be done to magically tell a life story. Think: Angela's Ashes, Lucky, Bastard out of Caroline, The Color of Water, Eat, Pray, Love, The Beautiful Struggle: A Memoir, and so forth. Happy reading and writing~*
Lots of good resource materials and things to think through. May need to read more than once.
Tristine covers all the bases for the craft of writing memoir and personal narrative. Great examples. Very readable. My memoir will be of much higher quality because of her book. My writing partner and I agree, this is the best one we've read so far. My writing partner is widely read in the field and I've read several. We highly recommend it.
