I would buy anything recommended by Julie Bogart. She just knows her stuff.

I purchased this in Kindle format to use with our Brave Writer book guides. I love the information and the way grammar is explained. However, the kindle version has a huge problem with the page numbers! While all the pages appear to be present the numbers are way off. Here are the numbers if the first dozen pages: 1, 3, 4, 22, 41, 42, 44, 49, 57, 58, 69, 77. As you can imagine this makes it very difficult to find the pages I'm looking for. In total, the page numbers go from 1 to 6266!

Who woulda thunk it? Cartoonists as grammarians!! Wonderful!Fine and Josephson make their points without insulting the student nor overburdening the teacher. Nitty-Gritty is well organized and well explained. I have used these books very successfully in tutoring adults. A recent forty-five year old student, Cheryl, remarked she followed her book's CNN ticker in her text and "couldn't get enough of it." I agree with Cheryl.

Everything we wanted to know got answered. Am using this from the recommendation of Bravewriter for use in our homeschool to teach a kid how to write. Very good presentation of grammar - way more fun than Strunk & White

Love the book! Great review! Yes. I can and do look up grammar online. I still need a good book. This one is part of my grammar toolkit.

I like it's user-friendliness. Some topics weren't covered, but what it does cover was pretty easy to understand and it's not a huge and overwhelming book to read. My kids love the comics.

It covers a lot but we regularly have to refer to other sources for deeper information or to answer further questions my son has.

This book is even better than I hoped. It is clear and easy to understand and also quite funny. I would not have thought english grammer could be such fun.

Simon Van Booy is the award-winning and best-selling author of seven books of fiction, and three anthologies of philosophy. He has written for the New York Times, the Financial Times, NPR, and the BBC. His books have been translated into many languages. He lives in New York with his wife and daughter. In 2013, he founded Writers for Children, a project which helps young people build confidence in their storytelling abilities through annual awards.

The title says a lot about this collection, so if you're turned off by "sadness" in any form, it might not be your cup of tea. However, if you love writing that can capture a character and what they are feeling with beautiful language and creative yet efficient prose, then by all means you need to read Van Booy.I am definitely a long-time fan, but these stories were a bit of a surprise for me. They take on a more grounded approach, in my opinion, but still have that signature Van Booy beauty in the writing. It was like listening to a new album by a favorite band that isn't a rehash of what you're used to but, instead, a progression in some ways and a diversion in others without being outrageously different.I'm not sure which story is my favorite yet. They all hold varying mixtures of the sadness and beauty aforementioned. "The Green Blanket" was surprisingly uplifting, but "Playing With Dolls" apparently contained some dust on the pages that got in my eyes. I especially liked both because of their modern touch of darkness. I really enjoyed "Not Dying" as it reminded me of Van Booy paying homage to another favorite writer of mine, T. M. Wright.I'm already looking forward to reading them all again.

The collection of short stories are interesting. And rightfully, one review says that the author knifes to the heart of the characters. This is because he has very little time to do otherwise, given they are short stories. I like the reveal on many of these and the bite sized nature. I was a most disappointed with the longer "filler" story "Not Dying" in that it is not a story, but a VERY long winded description of an emotional collage which takes up nearly half the book and gives it it's title. I can see how it inspired the author and that it would not stand on it's own, but if that one story had been edited down by about 50-70% it would made the entire book 100% better.

I loved all the stories, you can go through the entire book in one sitting but I chose to take in the stories one day at a time, sort of like when you eat something you love slowly to savor it. This book's a keeper!

When you finish these stories, you realize that Van Booy has done the same, only he has shown you your own heart, with all of its shadows, breaks, and wonder -but not on the cold slab of a laboratory- somehow, it’s still beating.
